Gary Danielson - Good Riddance

Gary was just elated every time something went AU's way and every time something maybe went our way he was "hmmmm I dunno about that, was that legal?"

He was dejected when Bond hauled in the game winner.

I thought Nessler was impartial.

But the mask is off with Gary... he does not like Bama full stop.
Nessler is one of the best, but that is often forgotten because Danielson is so bad.

In that game he went from pulling for the underdog for the sake of a great game to pulling for the underdog for the sake of a great upset. He was so caught up in the script that he had created in his mind that he failed to see that Alabama had just handed him a gift. He got the great game plus the storybook finish.

He wanted Auburn to finish for one great storyline but was handed a better storyline and he totally blew it.

The thing is, I actually think Gary is one of the best in game analysts out there, if not the best. As someone else pointed out, he does a great job talking formations and tendencies of the teams he is covering to the point where he often calls a play before it happens. The problem is simply how he uses that talent to basically just beat a certain play or team to death. In the case of Saturday, he felt the need to critique and second guess basically every positive Bama play.

Over many years we have chaffed at Gary's commentary. He is like "a dog on a bone" and will not give up on a missed call like the missed face mask even after a number of other calls have been missed during the game. Constantly rooting for the underdog to pull off an upset.

I am not enamored with the CBS pre-game show either but they do have a camera on warm ups and build up to the kick off. They always start the afternoon game on-time unlike ESPN who many times are lucky to catch the end of the first quarter while completing a blow out game.

Disney is, I believe, attempting to polish up ESPN and add a gambling site in order to spin it off.
I can envision a day when we will have to pay dearly to watch college football and still be inundated with commercials. When that happens all of us will feel notalgia for the days of Vern and Gary and commercial TV.
When that happens, and you’re right it is going to happen, I’m not paying a dime. I don’t see how that is a sustainable way forward but I also can’t see the alternative.

Agreed. He makes it a point to insert himself into the game and ultimately becomes insufferable.

I don't think that he hates any team. But he is still an ass who actively pulls for teams in games and officiates from the booth. He can do his job without doing either of those things. He CHOOSES not to do so. Every announcer has idiosyncrasies. This is his. And it drives fans crazy.

The fact that every fan base dislikes him tells you all that you need to know. He alienates everyone.
I don’t dislike him…but you make great points!,

Gary is insightful. It’s just that he is a nag. Never knows when to give it up. While I said good riddance earlier, my concern is that the devil we don’t want will somehow become the new standard for our games (ie a RGIII or Mowins- in other words, an over emphasizer or voice inflection clown). Much more enjoable to put on the headphones and fire up CTSN and attempt to sync, but that ain't always possible.

as an experiment for those that didnt grow up hearing some of the greats, pull up an old Bama broadcast from the 70s & 80s.

I often throw in earbuds and listen to music during games.

I lost any respect for Danielson after watching his interaction with a waitress in a restaurant at Atlanta Airport many years ago. He was “holding court” with a couple of other guys. Gary was particularly rude and condescending to this young lady, for no apparent reason.

Your true character is revealed in how you treat someone that can do nothing for you. He revealed his true character to me that night. And I’ll never forget it.

I wished we had booth cams to see his and Brad's reaction after the play...

He also thinks that it is his job to officiate the game.
And it carried over to Nessler this time. Very disappointed in him.

Up until this game I had brushed aside my thoughts on him as bias (never see a red car until you pay attention, then all you see is red cars). I never really listened for his harping or derogatory comments on our opponents, only for Alabama. This game, however, there was no denying the absolute disdain for Alabama from them both.

I, personally am still waiting on the Gene Steratore to comment on the three men in motion penalty.

Yeah, that seems to be the biggest issue (to me at least) with Gary. He latches onto a few things early in a game and just builds his entire commentary around it, to the point of OCD-ish, repeating it like Raymond in Rainman. Lol
I remember that game where Gary got so excited he started screaming at Nessler “FIFTEEN MINUTES TO WAPNER!!!! FIFTEEN MINUTES TO WAPNER!!!!!…..”

Gary Danielson is just another Yankee commentator that has the misfortune of having to call southern games. He already has an annoying accent but now add the condescending tone and over inflated ego that he has to project on the broadcast and it gets to the point that it’s past time that he needs to get out of the SEC.

Honestly I get the issues with having Mowins, Orvlosky, and RGIII that people are afraid of but we have them already…. Those are breakfast games with breakfast game commentators. But atleast now we will have better Big game commentators.

I've defended Gary for years for knowing football and being fairly good at dissecting plays, but Saturday made me think I won't miss him as much.

I watched the Eagles and Bills Sunday afternoon and after listening to Romo just talk about the game and not be dramatic it was a reminder that's all a color commentator should do. If the game isn't exciting it's not your job to create drama. He tries to create drama when he should just move on to the next play. He couldn't have played for CNS.
