Interesting Science Stuff

Can one get the measles if they've been vaccinated?

Still possible but would usually be a mild case.

I had diagnosed and physician confirmed chickenpox as a kid and later as an adult. Unusual but it does happen. (To be clear: yes, different diseases but still applies)

also, pertussis boosters are recommended for some and tetanus boosters are a fact of life.

My reason for asking is this...if you're not immunized then you are the one at risk, not those who have been. Since my Stem Cell Transplant I have had all the immunization shots and some 2-3 times, i.e., Covid, flu, boosters, etc. I think I've even had the MMR 2x. All I know is that other than one slight case of Covid that lasted @ 3 days, I've had NOTHING! And this was with my immune system being wiped out and reborn.

Sounds to me like Darwin is at work thinning out the gene pool. ( I hate to say it that way, but that's the truth.)

unfortunately, the kid never had a chance to be competent to make their own decision. Forget darwin. That's just poor decision making from the parents and it caused their child to die.

Could not agree more...I was just pointing out that these actions hurt those who either have idiotic parents or themselves make bad decisions. I've watched this scenario repeatedly through my life, in everything from fireworks, guns, motorcycles and you name it. It is sad when anyone does something like this...it is tragic when a child pays the price for parental stupidity.

I cannot believe what our country has become...

Amen and amen, Padre.

More measles cases in NJ.

Once again and as usual, an unvaccinated international traveler returned home and spread it to at least two more unvaccinated people.

These events have become more common as more people go unvaccinated, but they usually peter out after a handful of cases.

There is the real possibility that instead of it being brought back home by US international travelers that it will again become endemic in the US. We need a vaccination rate of about 95% to keep that from happening and we just aren't there.

Before vaccines, the case fatality rate was 1 to 2 out of 100 people infected (1-2%).

Pneumonia occurs in about 1/20 cases.

Encephalitis (brain inflammation) occurs in 1 in 1000 to 2000 cases.

Rarely, and years after infection (7-10 years), Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) occurs. This is often fatal.

1/5 unvaccinated people with measles require hospitalization.

Current CFRs are in the 1-3/1000 range, give or take.

The disease can be generally be prevent with vaccination and high vaccination rates stop community spread.

Before vaccines in the US 400-500/year died from measles.

There is no credible evidence that vaccines cause autism.

I thought this was interesting.
Not trying to get into politics, but how do you preserve an iron item that was soaking in saltwater for a century and a half?
The pulled up the turret of the Monitor, put it in a huge tank of water, and, over several years, have gradually been lowering the salinity of the water until one day, they will be able to display it without water.
But first they have to flip it over right side up.

Lord, if anything in your post or the video is considered politics we are doomed anyway.

Great historical artifact. Glad it is being preserved with the use of scientifically proven methods.

Thanks for posting.

In this day and age, anything can go political in the blink of an eye.
Anyway, the Mariner's Museum in Norfolk is worth a visit. It is a little pricey ($35 I think), but they have to pay for things like the Monitor turret, and maintaining the USS Wisconsin.
Most of the Monitor was wood. The deck had armor plating I think, but the ship itself rotted away a long time ago. Glad they saved the turret, though.

Oh, I know it can - even things that shouldn't.

Anyway, sounds like a great place. I enjoy a good historical field trip/vacation and museums. Got to visit the USS Alabama and the aviation museum there a few years ago and really enjoyed myself.

I'm a hoot, I tell ya!

That's amazing. Probably needs much more testing, but could be a huge breakthrough. I would do it now, if I had to!

If it turns out to be valid research and replicable then it's huge, but we're a long way from that.

Same for the mRNA pancreatic cancer vaccine, so long as the funding doesn't get cancelled.

That is not a political statement, but a matter of fact statement.

Not everyone had an immune response to this vaccine (only about half did), but 6/8 who did we cancer free after three years. Early research, for sure, but that is encouraging. Pancreatic survival rates are abysmal.
