Question: Lance Thompson?

Sure sign you have a suspect head coach when you are more excited about the asst. coaches.
I am not sure that is the case. I wanted to know what you all thought about CLT before he bolted north.

I do wonder if our guys can coach or if they are just recruiters. I have heard that over and over from CLK about how good of recruiters he has.

Can they coach? The spring will tell a little bit.....very little. Bring on September and lets find out for real.

I did not read every response in this thread, so I apologize if this point has already been made. It is what it is, as Saban says. Lance Thompson at a school like Bama, or FSU, or Florida could be "recruiter of the year" year after year if he's recruiting an area that is a hotbed of talent. However, if he were at a school like Utah State, recruiting the Cheyenne Wyoming area, would he be recognized as "recruiter of the year"? I think not. So Mr. Thompson has been fortunate to be where he's been and been assigned to good recruiting grounds. Will he do a good recruiting job at UT? Sure. It's a big time program and I'm sure he will get the recruiting areas that he requests because he is clearly a prima donna. Thanks for the recruiting you did for us in the past Lance. But when you go toe to toe with Mr. Saban for a kid, well, good luck with that.

Roll Tide!
Nice post...I hope you are correct about him still being able to recruit. You are dead on about him recruiting in BFE. You would have never heard his name if this was the case.

Well look at it this way.

Kiffin's record before he was fired was .250

He did not call plays at USC, he was co offensive co ordinator, Steve Sarkisian called all the plays.

Kiffin was passed over for the job at Washington after expressing interest.

Comparison's are being made about Kiffin being like Spurrier, Saban and Meyer. All 3 of those coaches had proven themselves before they were hired by UA and UF.

UcheaT was turned down by just about every decent coach available, Kiffin IMHO was a last resort.

Lance Thompson before he was hired at UA, had just been demoted from DC at UCF.

Contrary to what Kiffy-Kins believes, players come to a university not because of the recruiter, they come for the HC and tradition of the University. None of No Pants Lance's recruits followed him to UcheaT and once again we ended up with a class ranked 1 or 2 depends on what service you use.

Discipline will be a huge problem at UcheaT, when you have a HC that acts like a teenager, there will be no authority figure. Lets face it when you have a asst coach go in a recruits house smelling of alcohol and cussing, that cannot be good. Kiffiy Kins will have trouble keeping Lance's pants on him. Train wreck in the making.

Coach "O" you asked about his coaching abilities, see OLE MISS, look at the improvement after he left.

You can sit there and tell yourself that this was a good hire, but if UT fans were honest with themselves, most of them would admit they are all very worried and ashamed of Kiffy-Kins actions.

Al Davis told you what kind of person he was, but everyone said he was old and senile, why has Kiffy-Kins not got his 3 mil? Maybe because he does not want to fight it in court, he knows Al Davis was right, even if Davis was wrong, he sure gave him ammuntion last week to use against him in court.

Cover 2 defense, thing of the past people have figured out how to beat it.

UcheaT will be looking for coach 2 or 3 years from now with the program in worse shape than it is now, Kiffy-Kins will never be heard from again he will take his big buyout and live nicely.

THE END.

Tell us how you really feel. :biga:

VolFan, coach Saban had recruiting relationships with the highschool head coaches in Mobile way back when he was HC at LSU. He signed Jamarcus Russell and another big time defensive back that stared at LSU from Mobile, can't remember his name at the moment, Chevis?. Now I don't know if LT was assigned Mobile while he was at LSU but coach Saban when hired at Bama had already laid the foundation for recruiting success in that area. Did LT sign any Mobile kids during his stay at UCF? I couldn't tell you.

What blows my mind is your Tennessee being out hired for a head coach by Miss. ST. Dan Mullen from Florida now has 2 National championships as an OC and has been coaching and recruiting in the SEC for 5 years. The only thing Kiffin has on Mullen is a brief bad failed coaching stent in the Pro's.

Kiffin does have a bigger name school to recruit to but as far as his coaching abilities how is he better than Mullen?

Tennessee needed a slam dunk head coach hire like say a Saban or a Meyer to justify firing a coaching legend. I know you probably didn't have a say in the process but it does remind me of Bama from back in the late "90's. You better pray he doesn't bring your beloved Vols even further down like Dubose did to us.

Although from our point of view it would be poetic justice.;)

Nice post...I have to agree with most of it. That are a couple of points I could argue, but I have no dead set proof of my side.

I hope the last paragraph does not happen, but it very well could.

I asked this question rhetorically earlier, but I guess I was being too obscure. It would seem logical that CLK would send CLT right back to Mobile, where he keeps saying he dominated recruiting. Last I heard, that wasn't to be his territory. Well, I have pretty good info that he's welcome in that community only when he's coming as Saban's emissary. In fact, he's irritated almost all the HS coaches in that area with his antics. I find it very telling that he's going where? Memphis? I hope they send him back to Mobile. Like to see him go head to head with CNS...

I'll bet CNS will know lance's area. Memphis is where he went FIRST!!!!!! As an olive-branch to volfan1,,,,,, Monty can coach.

Well Tennessee has only themselves to blame if it happens. We had one of those all-star assistants group under Dubose and you know how that turned out. It makes no sense to most of us as for Tennessee having hired Kiffin.

We all laugh at Auburn for hiring Chizic but in reality them hiring Chizic makes more sense that UT's hiring of Kiffin. Chizic has ties to Auburn having coached their defense during Auburns most gloried time and he was at least a head coach in college and has ties and experience recruiting the South.

Kiffin came from the West coast as a fired head coach in the Pro's, remember Iowa St. hadn't fired Chizic, and he had to hire established recruiters away from other SEC schools to even have a chance in this year in recruiting.

Did he hire them solely for their recruiting abilities and was their coaching abilities even considered? I know he knew Orgeron from his USC days and I suspect his dad was hired for his coaching ability, but it almost seems that he was desperate because of his lack of contacts and relationships here in the South.

Desperation is no way to be hiring assistants but I can certainly understand his position. What else was he going to do? Its not really Kiffin's fault though its Tennessee's. I mean if you are going to go the assistant route, which in reality is all Kiffin has been successfully, you would think a Charlie Strong hire would have been a bigger splash and a more sensible hire than Kiffin.

He is a top notch defensive assistant coach at a national power just as big or bigger than USC is. He is experienced in recruiting in the SEC. He would be praised nation wide by everyone for hiring a minority. Tennessee would have come out smelling a whole lot better than they do now and I know he wouldn't have set off a mouth barrage against Urban Meyer ya'lls biggest nemesis in the Eastern conference.

Of course logic to most of us Bama fans has come from our recent pains of self destruction in Tuscaloosa. And hey don't get mad at us if we take a measure of happiness from ya'lls demise further down the abyss of irrelevancy.;)

Most coaches in the NFL had caught up to Monty's cover two defense. Just look at the results from the previous season. I think he's got a srew loose if you ask me.:BigA:

Very nice post...Strong would have been nice. I wanted Brian Kelly.

I hope we don't go down the same road you guys have. Only time will tell if we do or not

Well, first I think UT had to make a better hire than this to justify firing a legend and couldn't wait for Gruden's season to end to gage his interest (to which we can now be certain it would have been high). So they went with the splash hire to help recruiting. Poor decision: short-sighted and too directed towards short-term gains and not long-term goals.

Kiffin has an impressive hill to climb as he's arguably the worst coach in the conference yet he talks to the deans of the league as if he's accomplished something. Even more concerning, he's inherited a team that is 7-5 at the absolute best next season. I think 6 or 7 losses is far more likely with the turnover on the OL, no playmakers, and no QB. All this big talk is going to look awfully stupid by November 2009. If he doesn't make major gains in the 2010 season, all his credibility will be salted by year two.

Considering his success as a head coach, one would be fair to assume that UT is going to struggle the next few years. Sure Oakland is not a 5-star organization, but his interim replacement won more games in a partial season than he won his whole tenure at Oakland. Cable unified the team that was obviously directionless. As it's said: "the fish stinks from the head." Oakland wasn't a great team, but they had a good defense and Kiffin couldn't make a single bit of offensive progress with his young unit the whole time there.

What USC assistants under Carroll have went on to any sort of success? Chow laid a stinker with the Titans. Orgeron was one of the worst SEC coaches ever. I would be very skeptic of relying on the Carroll tree of coaches to find your next program builder. Coaches there babysit a talented roster, their position's or unit's success should be tempered with that thought.

Tennessee fans should get behind the guy, as a divided community will not help the program either. Alabama fans had to make the same concession in 2003 with Shula. I was worried about this guy from the first press conference, he looked in over his head...but I put my worries aside and got behind the program. If he was as bad as thought, surely he would prove it in a few years: which he did. Tennessee fans are eating Kiffin up because it feels good. It beats Fulmer and his "workin like heck" to Vols. Still, you will look back in a few years and say "you know, my fears were right...this guy wasn't ready to lead a program like Tennessee."

One thing, I am not sure you can say CLK beats Fulmer.....not yet. He may never IMO. I know you guys hate Fulmer, but he was a good coach at UT.

I hope the program is better off now...the next couple of seasons will tell
