DL hasn’t been the same since Bo was here.
And the Oline hasn’t been where it needs to be since the days of Kyle Flood. And we saw a group that looked “rag tag” against Rice look like “Joe Moore award” candidates against us Saturday night.

I had high expectations for Wolford. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year thinking he had to clean up after Doug Marrone. Maybe the problem wasn’t Marrone.

Jeff Stoutland has been in Philly with the eagles after leaving Alabama in 2012. Ten years. And he has remained there through even HC turnover for one reason. The man can coach. Pure and simple.

What I would give to have a Stoutland, Flood, or even Brent Key type coach again.

Man I hope you are right.

By the way, the worst part about this weekend's result? We have not been able to mock Texas 8&4 sufficiently.
The only big issue today in terms of a rebuild “like 1976” is the transfer portal and it in combination with NIL.

In 1975, Rutledge, Nathan, Krauss, Wingo, McNeal, Lyons etc. knew they had to be patient and “wait their turns“ as freshmen and sophomores. Transfer and you sit. Period.

Today, halfway through your freshman year someone is “in your ear” about immediately playing time elsewhere and a better NIL.

Patience and commitment are no longer rewarded. It is sad.

If Milroe starts against USF, then Saban has learned a damn thing.
If I was a betting man.....I'd bet Milroe starts. The question is how long into the game he goes. Against USF he'll look like The Flash, but my goodness Buchner and Simpson have to see action, especially Simpson. Game reps might help Simpson.

I haven't felt this frustrated since that 1st half vs Georgia when Hurts couldn't do anything against their D. I remember saying at half time, mainly to myself, that if Jalen came back out as QB for the 2nd half I was going to turn the game off. I was just getting too frustrated watching the futility.

Feels like we are back at that point, but with no Tua on the bench to save us.

That’s where I’m at. If Milroe continues to play QB, I won’t watch.

I expect the game with USF to be just like the opener against MTSU. Milroe will start and play well and get the majority of the snaps. Then we'll see Buchner and Simpson in the 2nd half. But I don't expect anyone to look that much better than anyone else.

I would really love to see Lonergan get some meaningful snaps but I don't expect that to happen.

I have not felt this hopeless about Bama football since Saban arrived. Last year and the start of this year lead me to believe Saban might not have another title in him. I don't think he has a clue how to change things at this point.

What really confuses me is how a team with sooooo much supposed talent ends up like this. Check the team recruiting rankings over the last 3 years and explain the last 2 year. If not for Bryce Young, we are talking about a 4-5 loss team last year.

I said the same thing with that title game. When Tua was bouncing around and Herbstreit said he looked like he was going to play I told my wife I'm going to stick with it if Tua plays.

I plan on making heavy use of my DVR this season.

After the MTSU game, CNS said the QB position was still a competition. IF that IS true, it would be good to see one of the other "competitors" given the opportunity to START a game, same as the opportunity given to Jalen Milroe. This week's game is the perfect time to do that.

I was planning on 2-3 trips to tuscaloosa myself. If Milroe is the QB i wont make the trip. I'll still watch and support, but not spending that sort of money to watch us start a RB at QB.
I live in South Florida and was going to make the trip to USF. I was going to pick a pair of tickets this week. They aren't expensive, but I'm gonna save my money and mileage on my car.

I would look at this week and game as an opportunity to get some stuff right for Ole Miss and try out new combinations on the oline and at QB. I would also unleash every form of blitz known to man to create pressure in a live game situation.

I'm just spitballing but I don't think there was much competition at QB during last week's practice. I think we went all in for JM. Boom or bust.

Well, it busted!

Did you mean Kyle Flood as Oline coach? Brent Key (former Alabama Oline coach) is the head coach at Georgia Tech.

As to #4, whatever CNS chooses to do is on him. Two games into the season (8 quarters) is a pretty good body of work. The problems we saw on o line were there versus MTSU. Most of us chalked it up to MTSU’s “sell out” style of defense and it being their first game as a unit. Clearly there are issues. As to the QB role, I expect this to be “the audition part 2”.

Coach Saban makes $10 million a year and winning football games is part of that. At the end of the day the performance of the team, good or bad, is his responsibility. Coach Saban said as much when he opened his post game press conference on Saturday night.

Coach Bryant often said “the biggest improvement you normally see with a team is between the first and second game”. If that is truly the case, and that was our “improved” version, we’ve got a long way to go.

So how would I feel about remaining “status quo” in the USF game? Probably not very good but that really doesn’t matter. Coach Saban isn’t going to change anything based on my feelings. The real question is how is Coach Saban going to “feel”‘ rolling out that same line up Saturday afternoon? Does he feel they improved enough to play winning football in the SEC? If at around 6:30 pm the answer is “maybe” or “no”, then he has a whole different mess of fish to fry. And he gets paid $10 million a year to fry those fish.
Yes, Kyle Flood, my mistake....

I still think Saban is trying his best to turn JM into a Deshawn Watson, Kyler Murray and present day Jalen Hurts type college QB at all cost. Saban knows if he can get that type of production out of his QB you are almost unstoppable on offense. Will JM ever be like the ones mentioned above is TBD.

Good Lord people! (some of y'ens) You don't pull a quarterback out of the game after he engineers a late game go-ahead scoring drive in spite of a porous offensive line. Yeah, JM has flaws and it bit us in the rear but if there was clearly a better option it would have been dispatched.

My feeling at the moment is that change is coming at the QB position. That'll be decided over the next 2 weeks and announced just prior to 2:30 on September 23rd.

For this thread, I'm out.

Listening to Coach Saban’s press conference today, a couple of things:

Sacks were a combination of poor oline technique, inability of receivers to get open (coverage sacks) and not making reads fast enough (QB processing). Texas really didn’t do anything in terms of scheme they didn’t anticipate.

My translation: they whipped us at the LOS, receivers aren’t getting separation and Jalen ain’t making reads. Which begs me to ask myself “are we even giving Milroe “checks”’ in or out based on certain defensive looks or is that beyond him at this point?

When asked about having numerous players along the Oline that he felt, going into the season, he could win with, did he anticipate any changes this week, CNS basically said he didn’t anticipate any but they had work to do on the “little things” around technique to improve.

My translation : I think these are the best five. They just aren’t playing well together as a unit with discipline.

Asked about receivers and drops - CNS stated there was only one pass that was considered a “drop” so they are catching it better.

My translation: When they get a “catchable” pass, they are making the reception. Problem is they aren’t getting many “catchable” passes.(And my personal opinion is that some of the catches they made Saturday night darn near got them decapitated).

Asked about Buchner’s progress- said he is making process and had good practices and scrimmages last week.

My translation: CNS stopped short of saying “He’s going to see the field a bunch Saturday” but my gut tells me he will see field a lot sooner than he did week one versus MTSU, regardless of the score.

There's a distasteful joke in this sentence that I will just walk on by, so let's go with "a Lamar Jackson". ;)

Why is the D line getting a pass for the most part? OL taking a lot of deserved criticism but we didnt have any sacks, only 2 negative plays...allowing Ewers to look like Brady out there and have a game that made him a first round draft pick! ...We need pressure and negative plays to get interceptions, field position etc...and that is as big of a problem as the OL. For all the talk, the walk hasnt been up to the noise.

In the midst of all the very justified hand-wringing about this team, it's worth remembering they still have everything to play for. The margin for error, though, is nonexistent.

In the middle of all the gruesome mistakes last Saturday, for quite a bit of the game you could see what this team could (and might still) be if Saban and the staff can sort out the problems.
