In a late shift, Tampa QB Phillip Ely picks Alabama | al.com
Many times in recruiting a prospect will emerge for multiple schools and the dance will start with ultimately one winner and a lot of prior speculation among its fans.

But every once in a while, a commitment comes basically out of nowhere.

Even those who follow Alabama recruiting closely haven't been all that familiar with Phillip Ely, the quarterback from Tampa, Fla., who committed today to the Crimson Tide in a ceremony at his high school. Evidently, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Ely didn't receive a scholarship offer from Alabama until recently, after he attended a camp in Tuscaloosa.

Clemson, LSU and Ole Miss were among the schools reportedly to be interested in Ely, who hasn't lost a prep game as a starter.

Scout.com: Surprise commitment for Crimson Tide
Ely led Plant High School to the Florida 5A state title in 2009. He passed for more than 1,800 yards with 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He was named honorable mention All-State quarterback for 5A classification.

Ely has something in common with the Tide's quarterback Greg McElroy. Both signal callers have not lost a game as a starter since JV football.

Here is an old article from just after Ely competed in the Elite 11.

Prep notes: Plant's Ely honored at Elite 11 QB Camp
Phillip Ely didn't get the Golden Gun title he was aiming for, but the Plant quarterback didn't walk away from the Elite 11 QB Camp empty handed.

Following four days of grueling and competitive workouts with 11 of the top quarterbacks from across the country, college scouts and coaches named Ely the camp's Most Versatile, a quarterback able to adapt to any offensive system. Florida commitment Jeff Driskel, from Oviedo's Hagerty High, earned the camp's MVP honors.

The Golden Gun competition was a target drill held at the end of each day. Ely finished second by one point following Wednesday's workouts. In addition to the on-field drills, quarterbacks went through the rigors of breaking down film, including a session with former Bucs quarterback Rob Johnson.

I just wanted to point out that if Ely sticks with his commitment, and I believe he will, this is the 4th year in a row that Bama will have signed an Elite 11 QB.

The QB talent at Bama is getting to be year in and year out the best in the country. It is amazing what CNS and staff are doing with recruiting these days.

Re: *** QB Phillip Ely Commits to Bama ***

Great pick-up. He's a 4 star according to one of the services, and he also participated in the Elite 11 QB camp this past summer, so he must be pretty good. Never lost a game as a starter on the HS level in two years, 19-0. Only knock on him is that he is 6'1"

WELCOME ABOARD ELY!!

he becomes the 4th straight Elite 11 QB to commit to Bama..WOW!!

the boy hasn't stop growing yet..give him time, even if he stops growing, I am alright with that as well.

Strong, solid arm. his long passes are nice without much drop off. timing is very accurate. releases the ball before the WR is finish with his route, very rare to see that at the HS level. very good technique with sound mechanical skills. quick release. pretty good throwing on the run as well. 5th rated pro-style QB in the nation per Rivals. btw he runs a 4.57 in the 40!!

Bone also said Ely will graduate early and enroll at Bama in January. I love getting these QBs in early. That's a huge plus IMO.

I stand corrected. Wow! Who knew?

Congrats to you, Phillip Ely. Now get busy becoming a champion. I suggest you read everything you can find that is written by Dr. Kevin Elko. That will help get your thinking and orgins of motivation in line with Coach Saban.

Phillip Ely proves silent commits do exist..

I've read the arguments that silent do exist & arguments from other they don't exist..This quote from Phillip Ely is proof they do exist..

"Phillip Ely informed Alabama coach Nick Saban two weeks ago of his decision..Talk about keeping quiet until now"..

I wonder how many more silent commits we have in this recruiting class..

Re: Phillip Ely proves silent commits do exist..

I've never doubted that they exist. I do doubt if the majority of us know who has and who has not committed privately. It's fun to speculate though.

Here's hoping that Clowney, Wilder and a few others have committed and are just waiting to pull the trigger publically :biggrin2:

I agree 100% with ya Blake..I've gotten into arguments on other sites with people who swear up & down a silent commit is an urban legend..

I'm like you in that I've had doubt they do exist..I wouldn't be surprised if right now Coach Saban has this class just about full with "silent commits"..And has been already working on next years class full steam..I hope Clowney, Wilder, Brown or Crowell & Big Cyrus of course, are all silent commits..Man "The Process" is simply awesome..

For those that have followed recruiting closely there is no doubt that silent commits exist. There have been a lot of examples over the years.

I like QB's from big time high school programs.

I liked Brodie, but that's one of the things that scared me about him when he committed to us. Higher ranked guys from big time programs pan out a lot more often than higher ranked guys from 1A schools.

Plant plays a tough schedule in front of big crowds, and is full of talented players. If I'm not mistaken they played on national TV last year, and probably will this year as well.

Congrats Phillip and welcome aboard. BTW, I hope Blake Sims does end up playing QB at some point, even if just for a few snaps. Can you imagine Verne trying to call a Bama game in a few years? Hilarious. . .

Verne Lundquist: "Blake Sims is in the game at QB for the Tide . . . What's that Gary? Oooh. . . .I mean Phillip Sims is in the game at QB for the Tide. What's that Gary? Really? My mistake, I mean Phillip Ely."
