Rocky Top

Shouldn't they have played the Vandy fight song? They were in Nashville after all....

Guess Minnesota doesn't know their geography. I mean, one of their players did travel to Knoxville by mistake....

Actually, the Bama fans were flipping them off

Not that they didn't deserve it, but it is still America. I thought it was tack that they played Floppy Top...but then again, it's their prerogative to have some fun. If playing that lame *** song makes them happy, so be it. Believe me, I was sitting in Section 144 right next to the MN band......there were more birds flying from Bama fans toward the MN band than I've seen since UT last played in Tuscaloosa.

They won, let them gloat. What's the big deal?

Who cares about Rocky Flop!!! I was at the game. And I have Tide Pride season tickets. I am ready to leave the stadium with a WIN. I was very proud of the support and all the Tide Fans there yesterday. We support the Tide, because we LOVE the Tide. I am ready for this program to WIN. It is time to WIN. Roll Tide.

Just as an FYI for the class patrol...Minnesotta played in the Music City Bowl against Arkansas just a few short years ago.

They did not play "Rocky Top" as a salute to the state of Tennessee then.

And you people want to get rid of the Rammer Jammer cheer? Please.

They were playing Rocky Top. We were just above them when they played it. Didn't we want the Oklahoma band to play the Bama fight song during their game last year with Texas A&M?

Big deal, who cares. I'm much more upset we lost than whether they played Rocky Top.

My thoughts also.

Actually...

they claim unanimously that they did play it and the ARK fans couldn't have cared less. Count me amongst those who consider it to be of no importance...

And this should unaminously silence this debate. Thanks for finding this out.

Hasn't this been beaten to death? Are we Alabama fans such whiners and sore losers that we are going to complain about petty little things after every loss? The same Alabama fans who are okay with chanting "We just beat the hell out of you" to Western Carolina, a Div. I-AA school! "Rocky Top" is the official song of the state of Tennessee. I imagine that is why the played it, if some band played "Stars Fell On Alabama" in whatever Mobile's bowl is would people be this upset?

Can we have mods start deleting any post about minnesota and Rocky Top?

Its really being played outt o make us look like a bunch of towel sucking cry babies.

Goofers board is full of congrats from vile fans all of which refer to us and our coach and players as scumbags.
I don't understand this. We've never even played Minnesota before and it may be another 112 years before we play them again. There was no trash talking on either side, at least that none that I heard of. They've got no reason to think we are "scumbags". Many of us were kinda wondering if Minnesota was even remotely excited about the game. You didn't hear a peep out of them in the days leading up to the bowl.

I don't mind a little trash talk, it's part of sports. What they did was a dirty slap to the face. I think everyone knows how Bama fans feel about UT right now due to what happened with fat Phil and the probation crap. What they did was pretty lame. I don't think there's any question about why they played the UT fight song.

Its kinda pathetic how they rubbed it in so much. Do they realize they only beat our 2nd and 3rd string team by 1 or 2 bad plays? I'd hardly think it's something to rub in. We had a lot of injuries and I am suprised we even made it to a bowl. Either way, they beat Alabama and that is something to be proud of.

It's unfortunate the Gophers had to be so lame. I would have liked to have a friendly non-conference rivalry with them like we have with Oklahoma. Oh well...

Don't know if it's true. Haven't been to their boards. Even if it's the case, people enjoy beating Alabama because of the TRADITION, whether we're having a good year or not. It's why teams enjoy beating the Yankees in baseball, the Lakers in basketball, etc. People like beating the BEST, whether it's the best at the time or the best in history. If we'd beat Minnesota, in a few years time, hardly any fan would remember squat about that game. Not because Minnesota isn't a worthy opponent, but because it was two 6-5 teams squaring off and because Minnesota doesn't have much a college football tradition. They were excited to beat ALABAMA TRADITION. It's the same reason Hawaii was all stoked to beat a 4-7 team last year, because their program beat a TRADITION. Don't be so hacked off about it, be honored by it. They hate us because we're the best that's ever been.

Before I start, let me point out that I am a second year member in the Minnesota band, and after seeing all the fervor that this has caused, I feel it necessary to bring up our point of view.

It was played as a tribute to Tennessee, not to 'rub it in' to Alabama. 98% of our band program doesn't know squat about southern football. Heck, I'd gather that probably 75% doesn't know anything about Big 10 football. Playing a state song has become somewhat of a tradition for the band when we travel; last year, in El Paso, we prepared and playing the Yellow Rose of Texas, a song which U of Texas is known for playing. I'm sure if we had played you guys in a Florida or Texas bowl game, you would have heard a song in tribute to those states.

I am sorry that this has upset you so much; to have such a great bowl trip 'spoiled' by the playing of Rocky Top is a shame. However, after being mooned, flicked off, sworn at, and nearly attacked after the game, I feel a little less sympathy for 'bama as a whole. Good luck to you guys, you certainly have an awesome tradition and in time you will make it back to the top.

Hate that...

happened. I would guess it flowed from the "Rocky Top" episode. Rocky Top was just UT's fight song until a few years ago, when Peyton Manning assumed the director's podium and conducted the UT band in "Rocky Top" while still in uniform. Since then, it's assumed an identity as an "in your face" symbol of UT's recent dominance in our series. Ever hear of the "Tennessee Waltz?"

I appreciate the explanation and while I was shocked to hear it from the Minn band I did not think it was done out of malice. HOWEVER, to not know that Tennessee is one of our biggest rivals and to not know that Rocky Top is their unofficial fight song is just plain dumb. Even a casual college football fan would know that and I would think that there were at least a few in the Minnn band. I am not shocked that you got flipped off and/or mooned. Beat Hell! We got done in by the fine ref's working the game. What sucks is it wasn't the same crew as the Tutorsee game. It seems they are blind nationwide.

Okay guys I think some of you are reading way to much into this. I seriously doubt that the Minnesota people know much about the goings on between Alabama and Tennessee but keep in mind that "rocky top" is the state song of Tennessee and was likely being played for that reason not to taunt us personally. We were in Tennessee and they did win and so they played the state song it just happens to be a song we hate.

mighty suspiciouis that they pay tribute to a state only after they have won the game and not before the game even started. And someone even brought it up that they went to that same game a few years ago playing arkansas and did not play Rocky Top.
