Mike Shula’s former Alabama assistant coaches cleaned out their offices Saturday, but according to a source, three have interviewed with new head coach Nick Saban.

According to the source, Saban spoke with defensive backs coach Chris Ball, running backs coach Sparky Woods and offensive line coach Bob Connelly.

Talk about a short honeymoon. If Saban keeps Connerly, it will be interesting to see if the fans will trust his judgement. I also seem to remember a moderator expresssing a strong dissatisfaction with Ball.
Saban's days are full, if he's willing to take the time to interview them, he must see something there.

I've been told before that always you have to have a less qualified individual when picking from from candidates in sets of 3. ;), maybe Saint Nick believes in that as well, ;)

this is scary news about connally. i do know that during the bowl season, and watching the better teams in the NFL. the majority of the nfl and better college teams are using zone blocking by the offense. however, it brings up the big question. is it just that we are so weak on the offensive line or is his coaching the problem. maybe some each. i do know if i see capps starting next year, hopefully britt was a senior this year, and wont be back, that i would be hard pressed to expect the offense to do well. we wont even have any proven running backs next year.

Maybe Saban just wanted to establish a quality bracket, interview the best candidate for the job, a second candidate, and then talk to the very worst conceivable candidate. Based on performance on the field, you probably couldn't find a less competent O line coach.

I'm frankly shocked that Saban didn't demand that Connelly's office be fumigated and exorcized to remove whatever demons have haunted it for the last few years.

I'll defer judgement to CNS - he's forgotten more about coaching and staff managament than I'll ever know. You never know, what if he keeps Connelly and we're pleasantly surprised? I seem to remember plenty of folks complaining about Torbush and Kines early on only to change their tune later on. Granted, CBC's been here for four years, but who knows if there weren't 'extraneous issues' hindering his performance.

Probably also good to keep in mind that an interview isn't the same thing as a job offer...

I don't necessarily trust Connelly, but I totally trust Coach to make the right decisions about his staff. One thing's certain, he doesn't allow dead wood to float around the Tidal pool for very long. Perhaps, CBC is claiming that Shula Sabotaged his efforts by demeaning Connelly's role or more likely by scoffing at the S&C side of practice which caused them to not be able to perform as expected when executing CBC's Scheme. Not that it's necessarily true, but we do know that CMS was too player oriented, and perhaps the OL conned him into letting them ignore CBC or to ignore S&C to the point that it affected CBC's job?

Just a couple of possibilities. What do y'all think?

(sorry for all the editing, it's the Sunday morning fog on my brain)

Under no circumstance is CBC to be given any benefit of doubt. The man has been a plague to our team. If in the unlikely event Saban retains him, it will be a mistake, but our o-line will get better because Saban will not tolerate the crappy coaching of CBC. If he stays, It will be very enjoyable seeing CBC getting fired midway through the season, if not midway through summer camp.
