With the departure of HC McElwain, doesn’t this position Florida as the most desirable vacant or soon to become vacant HC jobs in the SEC? Thinking this will impact the gutless Vols in getting a good SEC coach.

The Vol boards are already discussing this, that their AD has waited too long to release Butch so they'll now be competing against Florida for a coach. But then again, I'm not so sure that it's a direct correlation. That is, a coach that would go to Florida wouldn't necessarily go to Tennessee, and vice-versa.

Personally, I think they should hold on to Butch for at least a couple more years until the smoke clears.

So, does this help take the heat off of some other embattled SEC coaches or does this start a cascade of changes?

With the other coaches that are guaranteed to be gone, I think 1 or 2 that are on the fence will get more time. I just don't see enough good coaches available that can fill all of the spots that could be open. There should be a minimum of 5 open SEC positions in a month or so. #6 may get another year...

And by number 6 I mean the ole Gus Bus.

This is not a smart move to me. 2 SEC division titles. No guarantee you will find a better coach. Florida may regret this.

As much as I like Mac, this is a pretty gutsy move by UF and I kind of admire their intestinal fortitude for the fall out. It also makes UT look worse than incompetent.

I posted an Andy Staples column in the other thread explaining some of the things behind the scenes.

If aTm comes open it is equally desirable to UF. I’d argue with facilities and booster $$$$, it is a better job. That said, I think they are looking for a different type of coach.

Texas A&M has lots of potential for the reason you stated and I think they are surrounded by Hurry Up and Score teams and recruits, which mean they do want a different type of HC.

Half these teams will be looking for some really great HC who will work cheap, so I don't think the lack of a large proven coaching pool makes much difference. Look at he recent record: A failed Muschamp and Ogre was hired among several untested promotions from coordinators. I don't see anyone going after really proven coaches, like Washington's Peterson. Is a really good and proven HC going to quit his good job to come work for lesser pay?

I see promoting and recycling of fired coaches, like Les Miles and so forth. Big words of "we just hired the best HC available blah blah blah and the future is bright blah blah blah.

Good gravy, look at the great speeches offered up by the AD's at Nebraska and Oregon State and Illinois and S Carolina, not to mention the last three Tennessee hires, LOL. Three in a row for Tennessee and the glowing words of National Championships all coming to naught. Hahahahaha. Does anyone take these guys seriously? Not me.

May take several years for the smoke to clear. [emoji6]

Dan Mullen all the way if they aren’t stupid. He is an established hc, can recruit, and develop qb’s. Scott Frost is an unproven commodity still at this point imo.
