Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

Question for those of you who have been posting here a little longer - has any Bama team in recent memory had this kind of speed? These numbers just seem outrageous.

If those are laser timed numbers, I don't think that any team has had this much individual speed - anywhere.

You can probably add one tenth of a second to all the 40 numbers. Players usually are timed faster by hand and by their own staff. For instance, all the Ohio State players ran much faster at the Ohio State pro day then they did when laser timed at the combine. I think Braxton Miller ran 4.5s at the combine and ran 4.3s at the Ohio State pro day. I saw a scout say that he was adding a tenth of a second to all the Ohio State pro day 40 yard dash times because they were all materially faster than the times at the combine which were laser timed..

Look at Daron Payne's numbers:

Tony Brown and Anthony Averrett both ran 4.34 while Minkah ran a 4.43.

That's really impressive. I think I read that Minkah had put on around 10 lbs of muscle also. Can't wait to see this team take the field..

No question, the material is there. I see only three issues / question marks, none of which have anything to do with ability:

1. We need injury luck at the RB position.
2. Coaching staff - Will the moves (or non-moves) on the coaching staff work out?
3. With A'Shawn gone, will the players unite behind new on-field leaders and avoid complacency?

We'll see.

Yep - If they are not laser timed, they are not real.

1. I agree. I wouldn't be shocked if we use 3 RB system this year...
2. I think it'll work out for the best. OJ Howard will benefit greatly from this. Pruitt should change few things on defense, so I think we'll see new looks. Burns coaching Special team isn't a bad idea. All coaches work together on that, so nothing is changed.
3. We'll be fine. We still have Allen, Foster, Hand, BB2, Foster, Stewart, Ridley. I think those guys will be okay. Every year it's always someone who's a leader... Saban touched on this the last few years... I think we'll see a positive change in this group who will continue to grow.

I think having Jonathan Allen return really helps. That guy seems like a real leader. I wouldn't want to cross him.

Rashaan Evans is participating with the ILB drills. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. If he can pick up playing off the line and the pass drops, with his explosive burst he could be one heck of a Will.
Evans could be another Derrick Brooks.

Visually, he looks more like a safety....but, he's as fast as a LB I've ever seen.

He posted the fastest 40 time of all the LBs this spring. Agreed he's not the biggest guy, but Barron is playing LB in the pro's now and mosely wasn't the biggest either. In a scheme where he doesn't have to take on a ton of blocker head on he could be pretty good. I think it's a smart move for him to try it out. He's not added the weight he'd need to be able to be a 3 down on-the-line OLB in our scheme.

Evans is more of a situational player rather than every down player. He can excel in specialty situations such as spying the QB (like he did vs Watson in the NC game), 3rd down rush package, blitz package, zone blitz etc. He can play far less downs but still make more an impact than another player who plays every down. The good thing about a player like Evans is that he is almost impossible to counter. If CNS wants him to spy the QB the offense can't really counter that. Sure, it creates 1 less player in coverage but at the same time it completely negates the QB from moving out of the pocket. Evans will be a really valuable player for Bama this year..

I think a good comparison is CJ Mosely. He and CJ are similar size and both very athletic (Rashaan may be a little faster). CJ was not an every down player until his senior year and he turned into the Butkus winner, 1st rounder and Pro-Bowl NFL player. IMO, Rashaan will play situationally this season and then hopefully becomes an every down player next year.

some similarities for sure, CJM a bit bigger, Evans a little faster. Thing with CJM is that even though he wasn't technically an every down player till he was a SR, he did play a majority of the snaps in both Soph and JR years since he was the starter in nickel and we play that more than anything else. CJM also played his entire HS career as a standup LB, where Evans was a DE in HS. CJM was the best coverage LB we've had. Evans has almost zero experience dropping back. Net - I think a stand up position is Evans best chance at the next level and he's got all the physical tools to excel at it, but he's got a really steep learning curve to get there so it will be interesting to watch how that evolves over the course of spring and fall camp.

Same thing we see with linebackers every year. Give some guys a "stretch role" and see what could stick.
