Syria: What Next?

Colonialism???? That's got nothing to do with it. Most of the ME countries (with the exception of the Saudis and Dubai) are an extremely toxic patriarchy and have been since the turn of the millenium. They only respect men and then only those that are willing to kill you at the drop of a hat.

you should read up on how the people in charge in all these places got to be the people in charge. Fascinating stuff and yeah Colonialism plays a massive part.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about society and, ahem, college football right now. We are now fully in a narcissistic society, get mine, others be damned.

Make peace with what we can, and don't make the Bush mistake of trying to build a Western democracy in a culture that is not predisposed to even understanding those ideals.

I salute the fall of any murderous dictator, but I'm more Burkian (as in Edmund Burke). He said that (I'm paraphrasing) we should always be careful with the fruits of a revolution...as we can also have the worst result coming out of it.

That being said, I have a real sad for Vladimir and the Ayatollahs at the moment. :D

A Syrian redneck? I gotta say, I'm trying to create a mental image and not having much success there.

We had a guy in the dorm in college who had come directly from Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. His uncle was a long-term state Senator in the Mississippi Delta, and the guy started learning English while visiting there.

It was hilarious to hear broken English coming from the guy - in a slow, Mississippi drawl. Especially when he started cursing.

He didn't know that I knew a few Arabic curse words. One day, he started testing out his English curse words and I told him(to the effect) "<fornicate> your whore sister". I thought he was going to kill me.

Energy independence is a matter of national security, imo, and you're 100% correct that until we're able to stop buying their oil we'll not see the end of the terror over there.
We are a net petroleum exporter. The problem is that different refineries are set up for particular kinds of crude, so it's inevitable that we - and other producers - will always remain both buyers and sellers...

I would not want an eye doc who'd been practicing as a butcher for 13 years to cut on my eyes. I remember well when he took over. I thought "How bad can a middle-aged ophthalmologist be?" Boy, did I get a lesson...

Which reminds me, did you get that new cane and tin cup full of pencils I sent you for your birthday?

That "discovery" looked pretty sketchy from the outset. And given CNN's desperation to get viewers, not really all that surprising.

In five years time, Syria will be led by a warlord who looks and acts a lot like Assad did.
Assad came about due to certain societal conditions. Unless those conditions are changed, the conditions will produce the same thing again.
Changing those types of societal conditions is extremely difficult and requires a significant stimulus and, depending on where the society started, a lot of time.
