I agree. LT does not have ice water in his veins like his father did. That being said, I think he is a very above average kicker.

From what I could tell on the CSS replay, the hold and blocking up front were good, but the kick was where we faultered. Leigh failed to get underneath it enough, thus the trajectory of the ball made a block possible, when at that range it should have never been so if kicked properly. Nick himself seemed to indicate this to him in the immediate aftermath, if you read his body language right.

The fact that "block" occurred at the distance that it did with no penetration to speak of, tells you all you need to know. In fact, the camera view from the side tells the same story...

We have different special teams coach this year as opposed to last. Bobby Williams took over those duties for departed Ron Middleton. If you will remember he was widely regarded for his special teams coaching basically taking the Coach Ungrer bunch and turning them into some of the best in the conference. He departed to Duke. I am not sure what credentials CBW has in regards to special teams coaching but our performance dropoff has been noticable.

BTW, we dont have another kicker to give opportunities to. Corey Smith has been a complete bust until this point - really looking like he never even kicked a football before. I suspect this is a lack of practice kicking without a tee. That's the only thing it can be except for maybe the yips.

My biggest problem with the return game or the return coverage units is that we seem to be using a lot of offensive skill or smaller players on these units who dont have the tough mindset (except for Roy). Come on, how can we expect Grant to be effective on special teams if he is not even effective in running between the tackles. Special team is waaay more physical than that.

I suspect you are dead on.

I think BW was brought in mainly to help with recruiting, and Nick has a good working relationship with him. From what i understand, Bobby was instrumental in getting Mark Ingram to come here. Keep in mind Ron Middleton is an Auburn man at heart, so his leaving eventually was to be expected, and getting to coach with Cut again, whom he coached with at Ole Miss, was no surprise. We'll probably have some coaching turnover in the next year or two, I am sure Nick will address this issue.

UGH!!!! Im justy glad our coaches took it upon themselves to call the right play to win the game. They knew that there was no way we could rely on the kicking and it was a TD or we lose. Throw it to Julio and let him make a play, if not score, get us close enough to run it in....BAMM!!!! Get outta there and go home, which we did.

If Lee hits a good kick he can make em all. If he misses one he could miss them all.

I don't think a new special teams coach will have any impact on Lee and our FG kicking. Lee's dad has had him kicking off the ground for years and is probably as good at teaching the art of the FG as anyone.

It may have looked good from the endzone camera, but not from behind LT. To use an old Navy term, it was listing to port. Leigh Tiffin has a ton of potential physically, but he definitely has a ways to go mentally. I never have a great feeling when he's put in a pressure situation, his body language on the sidelines speaks volumes. I pray he gets it together for these rest of the season, we're gonna need him big-time.

Well, the only reason it looked like it might be good was because he blocked it and changed the trajectory. It was wide left all the way. No way is it good.

It looked good at first to me too until it hit the guy that blocked it in the bottom of the foot.
Here's my analysis of placekickers...."just because daddy was a great kicker doesn't mean son is".

Looked to me like he was trying to "guide" it in. That's like trying to "guide" a drive down the middle -- and it doesn't work. In the past, LT has had the tendency to push kicks to the right. Saturday he hooked or pulled both kicks.

I tend to agree with the sentiment here that, if we lose a game, special teams may be the culprit. BTW, UF is very good on special teams. :eek2:

In 1967 what many considered CPB's best team slogged through the Knoxville mud and won an incredible game against UT. Their field goal kicker missed a chippie at the end of the game of which CPB was quoted, "if he had kicked it straight, Cecil Dowdy would have blocked it." From my angle (in front of my TV set), Leigh pull-hooked it low and into the block. If he had hit it straight, the whole LSU team appeared ready and able to block it.

I don't think so, Earle. The kick wasn't that low and Jean Francois is a big man that can jump really well. He blocked a kick in the Championship game, too. He mentioned after the game that the coaches thought they saw an opportunity on film to maybe block one.

Bama didn't allow much penetration, but they failed to block low enough to keep the LSU linemen's hands down.
