I think 6-1-6-a needs to be changed. Why punish the kicking team if they catch a kick in flight like that, without impeding a receiving team player from catching the ball if he's in the vicinity of the ball, and can take it to da' house?

That has to be the best onside kick that I've ever seen!

Coach Williams, "Coach Saban, can we do it now?" C.S. "No!" "Coach S., can we do it now?" C.S. "Nope!" "Coach S., can we do it this time?" C. S. "No way, Jose!" "Coach S., can we do it this time?" C. S. "Okay, Coach Williams, but it'll be your ….., if we don't get that ball back, RTR!!!!!!!"

Do you think Coach Saban said anything to the Refs (Officials) prior to the game, so that they could brush up on the rules? Otherwise, the PAC-12 officials could have made a BAD call.

So, why does he deserve the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award? Is there a rule that you can receive this award ONLY once? Coach Saban deserves it several times.

If it goes 10yrds in the air & anything short of the goal-line is a live ball..Unless there's a player where the ball comes down calls a fair catch that's able to catch it..
 
When Bill Clark was coach at Prattville, he'd do this type of onside kick almost every game and more often than not we'd either catch the ball in the air or make the recovery if it hit the ground. It was uncanny how often this would work. It takes an exceptional kicker to put the ball within a small window - Adam's kick was perfect.

What a great quote...Adam's kick was perfect. He took a LOT of heat when he was going through his slump but he hung in there...and CNS stayed with him....
The "iffins" have been good for Bama over the years...Tiffin, Kiffin, Griffin.....

Interestingly, a official is posting on ITAT pointing out why it would be impossible to really "fix" a football game through the officials, depriving the usual inhabitants of one of their favorite delusions. He also said this crew was one of the finest in the country...

That is certainly possible. I have no idea how much coaches keep secret on the highest level of college football, but in high school where I officiate, coaches often tell us their trick plays and we sometimes even have a secret signal if the official handing the kicker the ball is told an onside kick is coming. The goal is to not do anything that will alert the opposing team, but be extra careful that we make the right call. Of course in high school we do not have the benefit of video review.

I remember a Wetumpka HS game a few years ago where Chelsea HS used this kind of kick. What made it especially unexpected was that they had already scored on the opening kickoff and then kicked an onsides kick which led to another TD. They ended up leading 21-0 before any Indian other than the kicker had even touched the ball. All that did was to make the comeback OT win that much more epic.
 
Well on their busiest forum, they're still arguing over the legality. A new poster has come on and is wrong-headedly arguing that it was illegal under the first two sections in that rule, when 1,2, and 3 are clearly stated in the disjunctive, "or" preceding 3. and 3. clearly describes what actually happened. Non of their other members can make any headway with him. He doesn't even know the difference between a "scrimmage kick" (punt, FG, and drop kick) and a "free kick" (all others)...

Example:

When Clemson did their onside kick last night, one player's sole purpose could have been to hit Stewart right before he tried to catch the kick allowing a teammate to get it. The new rule prevents that because the receiving player would be very, very defenseless.

The rule was changed in 2012 because the barn used this tactic to win the 2011 opener against Utah State.
