Effective range is probably <100 yards - depends on the rifle, the ammo, etc.

If you aimed it at a perfect 45° angle and let it fall wherever, you might get one to go a mile.

Zero chance a .22lr bullet would even travel three miles.

22 shorts used to say range 1 mile. Not sure how 'range' is measured. As crimsonaudio said, a shot at a 45° angle would yield maximum distance.
