Tell me - how does obtaining a scholarship for a relative not qualify as receiving extra benefits? :conf3:
It might violate the spirit of the rules, but not the letter of the rules. Obviously, schools ARE permitted to grant football scholarships up to their maximum allotment. There is nothing that says the players you give them to have to be any good or unrelated/unaffiliated with anyone you else you sign. Players sign because of where friends/relatives/other star players/etc. sign to play all the time. As long as the ONLY thing being offered to either one is a scholarship, that's okay.

Scholarships to players are allowed benefits. They aren't deemed "extra". Jobs for Mom and Dad, cars, cash, and most everything else are considered extra. The issue of offering a scholly to one to attract another usually takes care of itself because coaches must weight the benefit of the star player to the cost of offering a precious spot to someone who may not be good enough to contribute. It is almost always wise to avoid players looking for "package deals".

If he doesn't end up at Alabama, Cal would be a far better choice than Clemson.

I don't see Clemson coaching either brother up any more than Cal would and a degree from Berkley is one of those most prestigious in the country.
I agree with this. If Keenan Allen is going to school for academics then Cal Berkley is the place to go. If he's going for football and trying to be a first round draft pick in the NFL, then Alabama would be the right decision. If he thinks that he can accomplish both at Cal, more power to him, I respect for that.

Keenan Allen is a special player, I really thought he would come in and have an immediate impact on the Tide. Yes we'll be fine without him, but don't think that it doesn't hurt not to have him in this recruiting class.

I feel sorry for K.Allen now. Seems he is being "prostituted" and influenced by all these people who will gain from his hard work. Welcome to another episode of Pimp my Brother, Son, Player, etc.... Sad. Good luck to you son, your going to need it. Seems everyone in his world has something to gain from the sweat of his efforts. I hope he reads some of these sites and opens his eyes. Go to Buffalo with your brother and see how much love your shown by that "family" and coaching staff. :mad2:

Rich's point is a good one. Here was a kid whose recruitment was textbook good. There were no red flag warnings, character issues, or indications that we were dealing with overstepping "gridiron" parents. Then, boom, boom, boom, out go the lights. What's the one new variable? - a former coach, now handler, spokesperson who speaks in the royal "we" in referring to the kids.

Like everyone else, I truly hope it works out for the young men.
You know, this is exactly what's poisoning HS/college basketball in so many places now. While many AAU coaches/sponsors are truly interested in doing what's best for kids, there are MANY who are doing it solely for the goal of furthering themselves... and want to serve as a broker who delivers. IMO, it's a situation the NCAA better get focused on before it ruins athletics.

This summer when he took all these recruits out west.

Tomorrow, Oregon will host four talented players from Northern Guilford HS in Greensboro, NC. The four players will travel with their high school coach Otis "Coach O" Yelverton. "Yeah we are all taking off tomorrow around 7:30 am and will be landing in Eugene around 1:30 pm," said Coach O. "James Scales, Keenan Allen, Gabe King, and Chris McCain will all be traveling with me to visit Oregon. James is also bringing some of his family on the trip.""We plan on visiting Oregon, Oregon State, and Cal on the six day trip," said Coach O.

Would be interesting to look at this Otis character's bank records over the past years that he had been "handling" these kids. Has it been long enough for some to graduate and head to the Pro's? He may be contracting with them for payment after they sign if they make it to the NFL, kinda like playing the stock market and waiting for 4 years to see if the "stock" does anything. Why else would you do this? Out of the goodness of your heart? Let's hope so.

Regardless, Bama will be fine--It is KA's loss. I wish him well at Cal and hopefully he is successful both on the field and in the classroom.

Who might we sign in his stead?
Anything could happen, but I would imagine probably no one. If we sign another player now that just means we can sign one fewer in the 2011 class, and the caliber of prospect we could get with an additional prospect in the 2011 class would probably be a good bit higher than what we would get trying to find a last-second replacement in the 2010 class.

Truth be told, we have three guys on the table tomorrow, all three linemen, and we'll get whatever we get out of those, and that will probably close the book on the 2010 class.

Why in the world does Scout still list Allen as a soft verbal to 'Bama?

That's just a strange bunch.

I agree. lol It is probably because they are unable to confirm the Allen decommitment story by talking directly to him or his family. They verify their information to be correct. You know they do not 'jump the gun' using rumor or speculation. ;)

It seems like virtually everybody has gotten the decommitment story but Scout.com and ESPNU. They are both still reporting the situation as rumors.

Thinking out loud to try to make sense of it all . . .

Yelverton was indeed one of two coaches fired in the wake of the residency/recruiting scandal at the Greensboro schools. The other was a basketball coach. Both now work at Oak Hill Military Academy, with Yelverton as AD.

Yelverton lists himself in one story as Keenan's godfather.

When Maynard left Buffalo, it was Yelverton, not the kid's parents, who claimed the new Buffalo staff had disrespected Maynard by not talking to him soon enough after Turner Gill's depature. Check a little deeper and the complaints seem completely trumped up. This was a kid looking for any reason to leave, with Yelverton warming up the moving van.

Yelverton was also the one who suggested Gabe King and his family move to Eugene, Ore., after King was declared ineligible in North Carolina. King could have played in dozens of private schools at home. But he relocated 3,000 miles away. Why? Remember, Yelverton had earlier arranged the trip to shop the Greesboro players to the Ducks and other Western schools. After that trip, Allen, the presumptive Tide lock, suddenly lists Oregon as his favorite. (A check of Yelverton's FACEBOOK page shows him covered in Oregon colors.)

Then all of sudden, Oregon mysteriously rescinds King's scholarship. Could be that other schools started asking questions. Could be Oregon wearied of Yelverton's role. Whatever, two of the Greensboro kids are now looking for a place to play at the same time.

The last hurdle: Keenan's commitment to Alabama. This probably explains why King's name returned to our recruiting boards for a few days last week. I'll bet a dollar of Earle's money that Yelverton floated a trial balloon for a 3-for to see if CNS bit.

In short, Yelverton has been looming over this from the beginning. Keenan's commitment pushed him to the background. But once Maynard and King were free agents, his role as a go-between grew, as did the pressure on Allen to join in. Of course, Coach O couldn't have done any of this without the help of Keenan's parents.

Bully for the adults. And best of luck to CAL and its new kids.

Seems plausible to me, Shades.

Another piece of the puzzle with Yelverton and Oregon is he had a cousin who played at Oregon (D Philyaw - former Carolina Panther) ... So this could have influenced his pushing King their way and a couple of players previously...

One of the first people they met upon arriving for the Oregon leg of their tour was former Ducks star Dino Philyaw, a cousin to the players' mentor/tour leader Otis Yelverton.

Keenan Allen can choose greatness or mediocrity...it's up to him. If he chooses Greatness, he'll sign with Bama tomorrow and will find himself on National TV every week! If he chooses mediocrity in the form of Cal, he'll find himself on Fox Sports West after 9:00 pm! If he chooses Clemson, he'll at least be on TV on occasion and will play in some high profile games but lets face it...Clemson is the single biggest reason that CJ Spiller had NO shot at the Heisman! Keenan should have better sense than to care if he plays with his brother or captures HIS dream!

Something tells me that this ain't over til it's over!

Wow, this saga is getting too complex for me to follow! haha

To make myself feel better, I'm just going to go with the notion that Allen's family is simply seeking out the most prestigious academic school that has also has a big time football program.

At Cal, Allen can probably be an instant starter and if things line up right, Maynard could see some time at QB.

Allen won't get quite the coaching or the chance at a championship that he would at Alabama, but if he has the talent, he'll still thrive and his brother will have a chance at a degree from one of the best schools in the country.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss :)

It was unacceptable for Rivals to switch Keenan's status to open and trick him like that.

ESPN's saying that if Allen doesn't come to BAMA that Aub will pass us in the recruiting rankings. Have we become so deep with talent that we are now scaring off recruits? I guess that's a good problem to have!
