I get the feeling that Coach did a lot of the same weighing of his options last year when Texas came calling. He turned them down then, and he likely will turn them down again this time. The only difference now is that we are all aware that Texas is pushing hard, whereas last year most folks were in the dark until way after it was over.

So, while I'd chalk that up to a rumor, that sort of scenario is about the only one that actually allows everything else to make sense. If that's the play, Saban won't want this to go away. If that's the play, neither will Sexton (and as long as Saban is viewed as on the market, his other coaches become more valuable as well). It even allows the stories about the Sabans racking up debt to make sense.
It might be a bit underhanded, but then again what if Alabama is trying to underpay him? What if the offer they're putting out there is known not to be fair market value? I think we all know Saban is worth at least 8 million a year, and the rumored amounts for a deal on the table is in the 6-7 million range. It's not out of the question to me, that Saban and Sexton are just trying to insure that Saban is fairly compensated. But... it does also seem like that means Saban would basically have to mislead some people, and would he want to do that?

If 10,000 additional students is the correct total and all are in-state that's $120,000,000 in additional annual revenue. Think about how many scholarships, facilities, and other things that pays for - independent of the athletics revenue - and then tell me if it really is much of a moral/ethical dilemma to pay CNS an additional $3-4 million a year.

One factor to remember is that most coaches consider themselves part of a greater "coaching fraternity" and do look out for the welfare of the profession. If by leveraging the Texas opening, CNS is able to reset the broader payscale for top coaches and staffs, he will not only be improving the financial condition of his grandchildren and their children, but also coaches and coaches' families all up and down the pay scale as salaries escalate. CNS wins, Sexton wins, and coaches across the board benefit.
I'm not necessarily condoning it and I'm not saying that this is his entire focus, but it could play a factor.

If Saban signs an extension, he can still leave! He could have signed it, then waited for Mack to leave and negotiation with Texas. Nothing stopping that. However, it's not like Saban is going to get a new extension right after he signs the old one, so logically there's reason to delay. Clearly, the extension itself means a lot to Saban.
The thing is, there's no doubt that some people at the University feel that way. Just hopefully it's no one close to the negotiations. I don't think we have any reason to believe that Alabama isn't willing to pay Saban what he is worth/match other offers, but it's hard to blame Saban or even Sexton if they're trying to insure that.

Or you could look at it as him screwing over Mack Brown who is a well respected coach among his peers. That is if he is waiting on Mack to get ousted.

I was a bit off on the increase in enrollment, but I had read a different number in another article. Anyway, this gives a bit of insight into what has happened at UA since Saban has been here.

There is way more to the enrollment increase than just winning football games although that clearly has an effect. We have new student recruiters literally all over the country(something Dr. Witt started when he got to Bama). My brother lives in Cincy and his son wants to come to Alabama. He went to an informational meeting at a country club in Cincinnatti and there were about 300 people there and it was standing room only. Now certainly Coach Saban's success is one of the components of the recruiting success recently, but it is not the only reason enrollment has grown so dramatically.

I see the football team as separate from the school. I am an alumni but my support of the team has nothing to do with my degree. I don't get excited when the business school wins an award or gets a celebrated new professor. But I was extremely happy when we hired Coach Saban. I did not get excited when the Bruno library was built.
If you want to withhold your money from the athletic department then fine. The money from the athletic department pays for all sports, and even gives some money back to the University. But if you are giving money to the educational side then keep doing so.

When I went to the University, enrollment was less than 20,000, now it is over 35,000, and a large portion of those students are paying out of state tuition. (Probably in the hundreds of millions)
