Bama Coordinator Search Thread

I don't recall egregious NCAA trouble being a checkbox.

With Freeze there was lots of talk, but nothing proven.
Like a lot of guys Coaching Rehab may or may not be for them.
I've never been a big fan. Come to think of it I said the same thing about Kiffin.
I had to eat a few words about Kiffin's ability. He was a really good gameday coach.
We will see, what we will see...

Hiring Freeze would be awfully disappointing to me, not that it matters.

Nevertheless, he was given a one year "show cause" order, but only as a hiring as a HC. We could still theoretically hire him as OC...

If he wasn’t meeting with CNS about the OC vacancy, what were they discussing?

Analyst position or if they're friends & he wants his opinion he could be asking his opinion of other candidates from an offensive guru type viewpoint.

Remember this...unlike many fired head coaches who become analysts, Freeze got no buyout pay from Ole Miss (which often makes it easier for these guys to take minimal analyst pay). Maybe he is willing to make the financial sacrifice as a bridge to getting back into the big time, but you have to assume he'll want to start making some big coin again soon.

Chip Long would be my preference of the names I've seen out there so far. It would cost us Locksley if we hired him, but I like him as a playcaller far better than I do Locksley.

Locksley's collegiate career as a playcaller is pretty bad. He's been an OC in a spread-option system (Illinois) and a pro-style system (Maryland). At both stops, his teams were consistently among the bottom in offensive output, turnover margin and passing efficiency. His 2007 and 2008 seasons at Illinois were a little better, but not by much. Locksley is here now because he's a good position coach and an excellent recruiter. There was also some drama within the receiver corps this year related to the quarterback battle and Locksley probably singlehandedly kept that unit from completely imploding more than once. There are a lot of reasons to give him the job but none of them have to do with playcalling, unfortunately. As of last Saturday (Jan. 13), he was a virtual lock for the job but that has since changed somewhat.

Hugh Freeze's name is out there but I don't know how serious Alabama is right now about him as a candidate. Saban talks to a lot of coaches every year and not all of them are for the purpose of hiring. Some is to get background info on other coaches. What I really wish is that Dan Werner hadn't jumped to South Carolina when he did. If Freeze really is a candidate then this is going to be like the Lane Kiffin redemption story except the wounds are fresher.

As far as I can tell, Jim McElwain is not a candidate and neither is Doug Nussmeier. Both names have been floated by national media members but so far, only by them as far as I can tell.

There is also a chance you might here a name or two come out of the NFL level as teams go through their annual personnel purges and whatnot. Terry Robiskie (OC) and Sylvester Croom (RB) are both on the Titans staff, as is Jason Michael (QB, former OC), and Michael and Croom both have SEC experience.

Florida State is pursuing Locksley pretty hard. Alabama won't be able to wait this one out forever. If Bama hires Long (or anyone other than Locksley), it's going to trigger another shift among the staff.

Alabama could end up replacing 6-7 assistant coaches this cycle.

Long was my choice also. I would hate to see Locksley leave, but we are in it to win it, not to see if someones coaching ability has improved.

I think Saban likes Hugh Freeze personally. I remember an interview where they asked him what other SEC head coach would he like to go fishing or take a road trip with and he said Hugh Freeze without hesitation. Not sure what that was all about but I remember it surprising me at the time.

I agree with the sentiment that Long would be my preference but that means hiring two guys because Locksley will go to FSU to be their OC. I think Long would be a great help with shoring up what we lose with in-state connections on staff with Pruitt's departure.

As I was on my way to work this morning I caught the tail end of Clay Travis saying that Freeze interviewed for the job and that it went well. Did anyone else hear it?

I don't know what will happen with Freeze, but I think this is a good reminder to be careful to jump to conclusions about things we might not know the full story on.

I know Freeze's Christian hypocrisy hurt him and his influence, but people do make mistakes and life is really more about how we respond to those mistakes than the mistakes we actually make.

Probably only a few people know exactly what Freeze did at Ole Miss, especially his personal discretions. Even fewer know what his mindset is about trying to move forward from those.

I'm not saying this to "warm us up" to the possibility of Freeze, but just as a reminder to not jump to conclusions. I'm with others that if CNS gives Freeze a "second chance" then we'll just have to trust him.

It probably would be "cleaner" to just hire Long but Freeze could make for a great redemption story and I have no doubt CNS wouldn't hire him unless he felt like Freeze is the best step toward #18.

I’m in Mississippi and have lots of ole miss buddies who really loved freeze. I feel he would be a great hire. At ole miss freeze never could get the big running back he wanted for his offense. With D. Harris, N. Harris and Jacobs, the freeze offense will look to be more of a run first mentality. Freeze can easily adapt to the personnel of the offense.

If CNS goes with Chip Long I would not be surprised. He’s going to do what he always has done, go with who he’s most comfortable with AND who he TRUSTS most to get the job done. You’d think there’d be less doubters after FIVE national championships in 9 years. ;)
