Politics: Midterm elections catch-all thread...

2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

mail in voting has problems too. Dominant spouses making sure their partner votes the same (can't happen in a booth) or voting for their children or older parents. Things like that. There is a story on one of the reddit legal forums right now about a college kid that had her Dad vote straight Republican on an absentee ballot he asked for, for her and then taunting her with pictures of it. She had planned to vote straight D, her only recourse is turning her Dad in on a felony election fraud charge. How do you handle that?

That’s an absentee ballot. Direct mail voting works differently.
I’m guessing you’d handle that “child” just like you said, although voting age is past childhood. He would be guilty of forging her signature, that’s another felony.
But you’re also operating under the assumption that the “dominant spouse” topic is a thing; if it is, and “she” is that afraid, she is also probably afraid he’d see her voting in a polling place (we don’t have “booths” here, just tiny partitions I can see over and around without even trying.
No, on balance, with maybe a mailed receipt confirmation of your vote (which maybe you could contest in person if you detect fraud) voting by mail is easier, cheaper and much less subject to fraud than most of the systems in place today.

Pretty sure they are paid. Yes, it would cost more to have early voting. But that is a worthy expenditure to me.

They are paid. More money saved by voting by mail.

Law Enforcement has been strongly notified to watch closely for any ILLEGAL VOTING which may take place in Tuesday’s Election (or Early Voting). Anyone caught will be subject to the Maximum Criminal Penalties allowed by law. Thank you!

What law enforcement? Is it the job of the local police to look for voting fraud?

Are the old folks that help you out at the polling station paid or volunteers? Having to pay someone for a couple weeks extra work might be the argument against it. Sure does make it convenient though.

The ones who sit at the tables inside and use machines to verify your identity are paid.

Others are volunteers...such as the attendants who work the doors and help guide voters through the process, as needed. And the person who mans the machine that accepts the ballots when completed...and gives out the "I Voted Early" stickers.

I like that we employ folks to take part in elections. Aside from providing income...this provides folks an opportunity to participate in a civic function in their community that is more unique than anything they could ever experience anywhere else.

Not an apples to apples analogy but when races are held at the Daytona Speedway just up the road, there are many locals who pick up temporary work there --- just for those events. The same holds true with these local elections. A little extra income - especially with the holidays upon us - means a lot to these folks.

Voting was hard for me. One of the tablets that scans and verified IDs was not working. My identity could not be verified even though I voted in the same place 2 years prior with no problem. I has to do provisional voting. The new system in Alabama is not very voter friendly.

Imagine that...with Grandma Moses wobbling around in charge, I’d expect nothing more.

OK, so we have a twit retweeting a tweeting twit. At some point, the time-tweet continuum is going to fail.

I wouldn't mind if all social media disappeared into a black hole, but I fear a large portion of the population around the world would have no idea where to find their self worth if there were no more "likes" or "retweets"

While I agree, you do realize you are posting this on a message board (which is a form of social media) right?

Message boards have been around since the dawn of the internet. They are quite different than Facebook and Twitter mainly because of the relative small audience each one reaches.

The world isn’t watching TideFans, it does watch FB and the twit.
