Spring Practice Thread/News/Predictions

Had some drive time today. Got thinking a lot of high schools have eliminated spring practice in exchange for an extra week of practice in the fall.

I think the colleges ought to consider doing the same thing. Have a 2-week mini-camp in July before fall practice begins at its usual time.

I think this could help with alot of issues facing coaches now as well as players...

- Use 2nd semester for rehab and general strength training. Sport specific strength and conditioning start in June.
- Opens a window for athletes to pursue a 2nd sport like track or baseball which opens up more NIL opportunities.
- Allow athletes to focus on academics, NIL enhancement, and attend camps if they are in the portal (but they could only transfer at the end of the semester in good academic standing).
- Allow coaches to attend camps in the spring for recruiting purposes. Essentially move most of recruiting to the spring. Allow portal transfers and HS recruits to sign on window from January to April.
- Allow coaches some downtime for family.
- Align portal transfer windows and HS signing windows to January and June.

June signees (portal and HS) could enroll in summer semester in June go through S&C and film/playbook study and attend July mini-camp.

After the July mini-camp, upperclassmen would have a 10-day window to transfer before fall camp provided they are in good academic standing.

If the QB competition goes into Fall, then at least all 4 QB's will be on the roster until the season is over. We need at least 2 of them ready to play at any moment in case of an injury to someone.

I hope they all improve, and it doesn't matter to me who the starter is. I do think, however, if there is clear separation between whomever gets 1st team reps and others, that someone will transfer after A-Day. It is a new offense, so all of them except Austin Mack will need more time than just now until A-Day to learn the offense, I'd imagine. Obviously, Austin Mack won't transfer, so that leaves Jalen, Ty, and Dylan. I think Deboer will encourage all of them to stay until season is over and that the competition will go into August camp.
I agree but, if the O-Line, especially center, hasn't improved it won't matter much which QB becomes the designated QB1... JMHO!

The one that might, in my opinion would be Dylan, if he's put on the back burner for a second year... Also if there is a coach out there that wants his NIL to pay the big bucks to get him...!

While the OL wasn't faultless last season, a lot of the issues go back to the QB not getting the ball out on time. JM was last in FBS in time to get the ball away, and that was NOT by design. The routes were in place and very often open for him to be able to get the ball away, he just didn't. Against UM, on every sack after the first one, the coaches had the right call in for a safety value / hot route; JM just never pulled the trigger to make the throw.

I think it will matter a ton MORE. Another season of late throws and bad decisions would be disastrous.

In addition to this stuff that's obvious, we also don't/won't know how much the OL was doing in order to compensate for his weaknesses. If they were having to make calls that the BQ usually makes, it would increase the risk for breakdowns

Seems like some really interesting thoughts and many make good sense in mitigating the negative impacts of the current schedule on coaches and players.

I like what the high schools down here in Florida do...they have a spring game to finish spring. It's an actual game with bands and tickets and officials and just about as close to the real thing as you can get. They also have a fall exhibition game that doesn't count in the standings the week before the season starts. That's two additional revenue opportunities. They don't have scrimmages against other teams so they avoid that expense.

Not sure we can add any more games at the college level with the expanded playoffs. But I like seeing the teams go through the game atmosphere.

I wonder how many guys stayed on campus during spring break to workout and study the playbook instead of taking a week off to party.

Yeah, they were doing that back in the seventies when I was in school...😎
