Spring Practice Thread/News/Predictions

That's when Milroe, while walking off the field....as they had the camera right in front of him....was shouting......"give me the bleep bleep Heisman.
Yep, MILROE has a bad mouth, and he has an inflated opinion of his abilities.
He doesn't appear to understand that as a QB, someone hears everything he sez. Good and Bad.
There is a lesson to be learned there...

I'm not sure CKD will throw out part of the playbook to accommodate JM when he has other QBs who can run the entire playbook.

OTOH, even a scaled back gameplan constructed and called by CKD would be an improvement over what CTR came up with.

Agreed - in the interview with the new OC, he specifically talked about installing their system, making sure the QBs were doing the right things, and doing those things the right way within the system. Too many players have too much potential that will go to waste if we don't have a capable ball distributor.

No he does not. He was excited and hyped up at the end of that game. It's the only time I heard he say anything like that. When did he brag about his abilities or state inflated opinions of himself? Show me!

Could be wrong, but I don`t see CKD and the staff tailoring the offense around what Jalen might do best. They`ll have a system and an offensive philosophy and the QB that can best execute that system will start. I know....if it`s not Jalen they`ll " lose the locker room ". I would hope the overriding factor would be supporting who has demonstrated the best ability to win. But these days....who the hell knows anymore!?

He’s (CKD) said in public interviews multiple times he tailors his offense to the talent he has and that’s why he thinks his offense has been diff at every stop. Im not advocating for any qb but that’s literally what he said he does 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agreed, but I would think he's going to pick the QB first. Yeah, you can build your offense around Milroe if you want, but why do that when you have such a talented QB room? He will tailor the offense to Milroe if Milroe is the guy, but the way I took it, was that he will tailor the offense to the guys he picks. I just don't think it's gonna be Milroe by default.

Only thing I heard him say, was he would use Jalen's running ability. Can't recall the exact words. Sounds like it will be mostly what his offense does, plus some runs by Jalen mixed in. He won't say much more at this point.

I think this was discussed in one of the 100 sub-threads on Jalen, but the "interpretation" I made from CKD is he will build his offense around the unique talents of the QB to take advantage of his skills.

I think some are interpreting this as if he'll pull a CTR and junk 80% of the playbook for Jalen so he can make 1 read and then run.

FWIW, I DON'T think that is what CKD means. The starter should be expected to run the entire offense, but then they may tweak a few aspects of it to leverage his running skills.

I'll say it again, if some are so in love with the idea of "Jalen being QB" that you'd accept an offense that is NOT any resemblance to CKD's then we should have just kept CTR and saved the money.

If we end up with 2023 Jalen (unimproved on major weakness) we'll be lucky to finish 8-4. If CKD chooses that option when there are other QBs on the roster that can run HIS offense, it's a major fail on his part to repeat letting team politics rule.

Nor should he.

I see it this way. We have a dynamic RB duo in Jam & Justice and from what I've seen both are very capable of being exceptional pass catchers. CKD is obviously a master at tailoring his offense to the tools available so I'm really looking forward to what this offense will look like whether JM remains QB1 or not. Would his legs be an advantage? Yes, but only if he can execute ALL that's asked of him because we've already seen how teams will defend him without a good O-line and suspect in-game QB decisions.

Folks, we're beginning a new era in Bama FB so I'm preparing myself for a minor setback from the growing pains that this program will have to endure. I do however feel good about the future but I'm accepting the immediate future might be a bit of a struggle. I'm planning to be at A-day again this year and I'm just as excited for this one as I was in 2007.

Well, he did tell Nessler and Danielson “I don’t work on my running game. I’m not a running quarterback”. Milroe doesn’t even understand what type of player he should be. I said it all last year…square peg…round hole.

Joefus is right that CKD has talked about tailoring the offense to what players (not just the QB) are most capable of doing. however, he's also said that was within the overall context of the overall philosophy so there is some nuance in that statement. To put into a non-QB context, if he's got a RB who doesn't catch that well out of the backfield, he's not going to be calling plays for that. This isn't really any different than what we saw with Sark from Tua to Mack (and the players around them). It was the exact same offense and philosophy from a concept standpoint, but leveraged different skills present on the team differently on each one.

That's not what CTR had to do in the '23 season, where he had to completely change the approach and install an entirely new philosophy and offense due to what JM just couldn't do. That wasn't 'tailoring', that was pretty much a wholesale change.

I absolutely expect CKD to tailor things within his overall scheme to maximize not just QB talent, but all the talent on the team. That's what good coaches do.

I really don't think he'll make a wholesale change from his pro-spread, unless he has no other option.

The new OC said they were focused on installing their system, and having the players execute the right things, the right ways in the system so that makes me think there is no major/wholesale change planned.

Actually what he said was that the QBs main job is to distribute the ball to all the playmakers, and that running was a nice extra that can keep the defense honest which can help to open up other things.

CKD has been very savvy about what's been said and not said. He needs to keep everyone competing and build guys up being optimistic about them being able to do what needs to be done in the new system. Just like the build up, he's also laid some hints that nothing is set right now - i.e. when he was asked about Milroe and he said he was really happy with the entire QB room, but someone had to take the first rep of the first practice.

Based on what's been said so far; I think, first and foremost, they're looking for the best distributor of the ball within the overall pro-spread quick passing scheme of their philosophy. I also don't think they'll make a call on who that is early unless they want to lose guys.

Personally, I think CKD should refrain from any public discussion/praise of Milroe if the QB competition is legitimate. The media questioning him about Milroe and him answering is doing nothing but painting him into a corner of anointing Milroe the starter. Deviating will ignite a media firestorm.

CKD has to respond to questions when he's asked by reporters, though. I do think he's done it in a very tactful, savvy way. When asked, he's not really talked specifics about performance or anything like that. There's been a couple comments about the 'being an explosive runner' and maybe one from the OC that was a little more about the long passing, but not much more than that, CKDs talked about him as a person, praised his work ethic, etc, but has then generally come back to all the QBs are working hard and making progress with the install and understanding of the system and are all pushing each other, and then said, "but someone has to take the first snap of the first practice". IMHO, that's dropping a clue that this is a competition, with a new/different set of criteria needed to be successful and no decisions have been made.

Not the same thing. Not even close.
