Thoughts on Joe Kines (to A&M)

Coach Kines is an even a better "on the PRACTICE field" coach. I think he is also one of the best PR guys on campus. The press love him since he is a walking quote machine. His one head coaching experience for Alabama at the Independence Bowl had them howling at press conferences. He may also be the most entertaining speaker from the University. I have heard his "It is Friday so don't worry speech" more times than I can remember and audiences absolutely love him.

i guess you missed him coaching the #1 defense in the nation that was nearly solely responsible for a 10 win season punctuated by a final #8 national ranking.

average at best?

physician, heal thine own mental infirmities.

I have already explained that with,D Ryans,Anderson,Harper,Peprah,A Madison,Bino,Roach, and etc..............that year had great seniors with many were future nfl stars that led the way.IMO,with talent like that you would have to not mess up to do well with. Heal thine memory, and not cover thine eyes.

Any program in the country would be lucky to have Joe Kines associated with it in any capacity, yours included. He can't play though, so he'll need some kind of talent to work with.

People talk about his defenses not getting pressure on the quarterback like the NCAA never took a single scholarship away from Alabama during those years.

Tremendous upside to Joe Kines as a defensive coordinator not the least of which is he is an outstanding defensive coordinator.

I may secretly hope that he takes the job and Alabama gets to play against a Joe Kines defense someday but only because I don't think Alabama should shy away from playing against the best that's available as well as Tennessee and Auburn. ;)

Not to be too argumentative--but Coach Kines might have had something to do with the fact that those guys became future NFL stars!

I'm sad that Coach K is leaving Alabama, but happy for him that he still has that fire in his belly, and I wish him all the luck in the world.

Coach K was a big part of the defense for Charlie Pell at 3 schools (Jax State, Clemson, and Florida), when for several years Coach Pell was my pick to replace Coach Bryant after he retired--one big reason being that Pell's teams always had such a good defense.

Durn it, now I will have to pull for A&M, and I've worked up such a distaste for them that it will be hard! Sort of like pulling for Tennessee when Bill Battle was coaching there...

That he most definitely is. I recently listened to one of his speeches that he gave out in Arkansas at one of the qb clubs out there. Talk about a stemwinder! He can captivate an audience like few can.

I was a big critic of Joe early on, but learned to really like and respect him over time. I hate that he's leaving Tuscaloosa. If nothing else, I felt Joe was a real asset in the sense that he was a very good ambassador for the program and excellent choice to send out on the lecture circuit. But, I guess when football is in your blood you have to consider any serious opportunity to stay in it, and you couple that with the fact that he was probably getting close to his contract running out with us, maybe that made the decision a little easier also.(though somehow I seriously doubt this decision was all about money.)

Good luck, Joe, and remember this is STILL home whenever you decide to finally hang it up..

Congrats to CJK

I'm going to be honest though, I work at Applebee's and am going to miss seeing him there every week or so.

Watch his interview during the Indy Bowl, then imagine him placing an order for food. The inflection and tone are almost the same...

So? I doubt that you'll ever see a team from the SEC lead the nation in defense with a crew made up of debate team and band members. Coach Kines coached those guys up and came up with the game plans that enabled them to be so successful. Remember Coach Bryant's chicken salad/chicken quote?

You should be eternally grateful to Coach Kines. Without him, the Shula Error would have been a catastrophe on the level of the the Ears Whitworth years......Or worse.
