Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Would it possible for someone to compile a list of confirmed and post? A lot of rumors are floating, and I just want to separate fact from fiction (at least at this moment).

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Latest speculation list looks like this.
OC/WR: Paul Petrino
QB: Jeff Brohm
RB: Bobby Williams
TE: Lance Thompson - also recruiting coordinator is my guess
OL: Mike Summers

DL: Travis Jones
DC/LB: Kevin Steele
DB: Kirby Smart

ST: Shane Beamer
That list comes from other boards, following plane flights, contacts, reading tea leaves and magic 8 ball. I would have liked to have Major Applewhite as QB coach.

Another site is saying Applewhite was offered the Co-OC position.

One reason I added Applewhite. It could happen or it would even be a step up in pay at least if Applewhite came as QB coach. But Jeff Brohm isn't exactly chopped liver.

I am fairly certain it was Paul calling the plays in. Looks like Jimbo is out.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I've been off the board a few days and it may very well have been discused, but there were posts about CH and DU heading to Starkville. Have both of these been confirmed? Also, I see that Shane Beamer is listed as possibility for ST coach, was he fired by Croom?

As far as Paul Petrino goes... did he actually formulate the game plan and call all the plays at Louisville or was he like Dave Rader where Bobby called the plays?

I might be barking up the same tree, but I was also curious when I heard that there were former Shula assistants headed to MSU. I'm fairly certain that Croom made a statement during one of his tirades that he would never fire an assistant coach, so I wondered where the vacancies were coming from.

Obviously, if we hire Beamer, that would be one opening. Have others left MSU already?

On a side note, what is the NCAA limit to the number of assistants you can have?

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I believe the number is 9 on the field.
Yes, 9 on the field assistants (including coordinators) in Div I football.

The number goes down by divisions as does number of scholarships etc. but they do get a playoff. ;)

Bayou,

So does this mean u can have more as long as they are up on the box on game day?

No.

Only 9 assistant coaches can coach at practice or be on the sidelines during a game. You are allowed to have graduate assistants but they cannot travel to recruit. I am not sure of how many graduate assistants are allowed but 2 is a number that comes to mind.

Coaches in the box during a game are designated from the 9 assistants. Usually one from offense and one from defense.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

... Michael McNeil (recruit) is quoted on BamaMag.com as saying he talked to Lance Thompson, Kirby Smart, and Nick Saban, yesterday (Sat the 6th)

... that sounds like confirmation to me
While not officially released yet (neither are Steele/Thompson), we can put CKS on the "official list" at this point. As Rich reported earlier, we are getting closer on a few others also.
