Is there a scenario where we still back into the playoffs?

I had forgotten that this would be (will be?) five in a row against Auburn. Maybe that will happen. It is always good to deflate them.

As far as the playoffs, I don't think we are a playoff worthy team. On the other hand, if the kind of chaos ensues that would land us in the top 12, then I would have to wonder how many of those other teams are worthy as well.

It is hard to believe that we are the defending SEC champions and a bad call or so away from playing from the national championship last year. Seems like a lifetime ago

SHORT VERSION:
In the last 56 seasons (prior to 2024):
- 45 of those seasons (80%) would have AT LEAST one 3-loss team in a 12-team playoff
- that number is probably LARGER because there is no way to know how a committee would have ranked teams if there actually was a 12-team playoff
- the number goes up with conference consolidation

SELMA VERSION:
Three-loss teams in Top 12 that would have made the playoff
(three losses prior to bowl games; ties included as losses):

AP Poll Era

1968 - Big 8 champion Oklahoma
1970 - Pac 8 champion Stanford
1971 - Pac 8 champion Stanford
1973 - Nebraska (2 losses and a tie)
1974 - ACC champ NC State had 3 losses and ranked (13) below the Maryland team (10) they beat that also had 3 losses. So at least two (SWC champ Texas), probably four.

1975 - UCLA (Pac 8 champ with 2 losses and a tie....to AIR FORCE), Michigan (8-2-2) and Indy Penn State

1976 - three Big 8 champions, all with 3 regular seasons losses

1977 - Washington (7-4) was Pac-8 champion; ACC champion UNC was 8-2-1
(this was the year the top 8 teams finished with 1 loss - and the argument was over which of 4 teams was the champion)

1979 - had UGA beaten Auburn, they would have been SEC champions at 6-5

1981 - all 3 teams that tied for the Big 10 title were 8-3.
1982 - Oklahoma was five points from winning the Big 8 with a 9-3 record
1983 - ACC champion Maryland was 8-3 (Clemson was ineligible) but the Pac-10 champion (UCLA) was 6-4-1 and unranked.
1984 - ACC champion Maryland was 8-3
1985 - SEC champion was 8-1-2 (Tennessee), Pac-10 champion was 8-2-1
1986 - ACC champion Clemson was 8-2-2; Ohio State and Alabama were both 9-3, Buckeyes ranked higher....and Alabama with a head-to-head win (Tide was #13 in 12/2/86 poll)
1987 - Big 10 champ Michigan State (8-2-1), #9 SCAR and #12 N Dame both 8-3 as was Pac-10 champion USC. Better yet, #15 UGA beat SCAR and were also 8-3.
1988 - Big 10 champ Michigan (8-2-1)
1989 - ACC champ Duke (8-3), Pac-10 champ USC (9-2-1)

1990 - SEC champion Tennessee (8-2-2), all four B1G champions had 3 losses
1992 - B1G champ Michigan (9-0-3), SEC runner up Florida (8-4)
1993 - Pac-10 champ UCLA (8-3), SEC runner up Alabama (8-3-1)
1994 - Pac-10 champ Oregon (8-4)
1995 - SEC runnerup Arkansas (8-4) and other teams 8-3 (Auburn, Alabama)
1996 - Big 12 champ Texas (8-4) was unranked at 7-4 then upset Nebraska

24 years out of 30 seasons (80%)

BCS era
1998 - Big East champ Syracuse (8-3)
1999 - SEC runnerup Florida (9-3)
2000 - Big Ten champ Purdue (8-3), SEC runnerup Auburn (8-3)
2001 - SEC champ LSU (8-3)
2002 - ACC champ FSU (9-4), SEC runnerup Arkansas (9-4) with 10-3 Alabama ineligible
2003 - Big 12 champ K-State (11-3), SEC runnerup UGA (10-3)
2006 - SEC runnerup Arkansas (10-3)
2007 - Illinois (9-3) beat Big 10 champ Ohio State; you think they don't make it?
2008 - ACC champ Va Tech (9-4) was AP ranked several spots below 9-3 Ga Tech despite beating them, 20-17
2009 - ACC champ Ga Tech (10-3)
2010 - Big East co-champs (WVA, UCONN, Pitt) all had three or more losses
2011 - ACC champion Clemson (10-3), two top teams in Big East had 3 losses

12 years out of 16 seasons (75%)

CFP Poll (using their final selection poll)

2014 - Ole Miss, Arizona, K-State, Ga Tech - all have 3 losses
2015 - Ole Miss (9-3)
2016 - Wisconsin, USC, Colorado, FSU, Okie State
2017 - Auburn, 10-3
2018 - Washington, Florida, LSU, Penn St
2019 - Wisconsin, Auburn (and I tell you now, a 10-2 Alabama is probably in a playoff given our performance against LSU as opposed to ranked #13)
2020 - Florida, Iowa State (and undefeated Coastal Carolina makes it.....)
2021 - Utah, 10-3
2022 - Utah, K-State

9 out of 10 seasons (90%)

It happens exactly as you would suspect.

The number of 3-loss teams goes slightly down over time AT FIRST (but who knows what it might have been over 30 years?) when:
a) Independents almost all find conferences (20 in 1985, 4 in 2012)
b) Conferences become big enough lucky teams can avoid the established powerhouse (like 2012 Florida not playing Alabama or any year Iowa wins the B1G)
c) you can lather the schedule with cupcakes, justified on the basis of "conference play is tough"

Then - the moment the playoff EXPANDS (in 2014), the number of teams with 3 losses that would have made a 12-team playoff goes up quickly.

Why?
Well, one reason might be the pressure to schedule somewhat aggressively.

Another is the fact that most conferences (excl. ACC and SEC) went to a 9-game conference schedule, which reduces the ability to avoid tough opponents.

Lank = let a naysayer know

It's the self-created NIL company that Terrion Arnold and Jalen Milroe started last year after Saban came up with the idea. They sell clothing with 'lank' on it and have made a lot of money in the process. Arnold and Milroe have been using some of the proceeds from these sales to 'spread the wealth' to the other players on the team, so every Bama player benefits from lank sales. That said, while it's not been reported, many of us know folks who do know that the spreading of said wealth has given some people (ahem) undue leverage wrt coaches choosing starters, etc.

I don't think anyone thought that the revenue would be "shared" to create that situation...

FWIW, Allstate Playoff Predictor says we beat the barn and there's a 41% chance. If you look at team by team likelihood, that's right about 12th best chance...by a good 7 or 8% over #13.

So...it would be far less shocking to make the playoff than it would seem it should be.

Sorry, but 41% ain't great odds...

41% is roughly a little worse than putting your chip on red or black at the roulette table.

After milroe tried to trip - not tackle - the OU player after a pick 6, this Bama team doesn’t deserve to sniff the playoff and we all know it.

2026 is the make or break year for CKD.

And yet they are better than anybody else who is hoping for that spot.

It feels like drunken 3rd graders are writing the season script. Much like OT, I guess it is exciting in the moment, but I find it to quickly dissolves into feeling merely ridiculous and random. "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing."

I wonder how some of our fans find joy at being a Bama fan. Or is it a George Jefferson thing, where he was happiest when he was yelling?

I get being upset. I even get being picky and complaining about little things. Our coach was that way.

For me, if you take away the joy, what’s the point?

And now it’s permeating into hoops. I see it in softball too.

I do sometimes need to walk away from it for a few days. So I can decompress and re-prioritize Bama sports within my life, and then I can find my way back to “joy”

When I can’t do that anymore, I’ll walk away.

I see a lot of people with zero joy over this football team. Just don’t know how you all handle it.

Thankful for having one helluva a 17 year ride. :)
Balance.

If someone doesn't have balance with their fandom, they'll always be unhappy.

"Priorities" is probably the key here. Other things are more important than football.

If you don't have something in your life more important than football, you need to reprioritize and seek some balance!

No we don’t deserve it. But I can’t get this push for South Carolina over both Alabama and Ole Miss, both of whom they lost to.

College football, with its corrupt refs, stupid OT rules, NIL/portal insanity, and now this ridiculous playoff, has totally jumped the shark.

2026 we will be at 16 teams. It's ridiculous.

Refs will never be held accountable either.

NIL rules.....good luck to whomstever tries to enforce those. Pandoras box is wide open.

If they hadn't been destroyed by Ole Miss at home I think they'd have a better shot. Losing a close one to us on the road probably shouldn't keep us above them just because of head to head results

I get it because USCe has improved throughout the season vs a Top 10-15 SOS and has won 5 straight games and absolutely hammered both Vandy and OU in road games.

The same circumstances that Bama puked all over themselves.

Ole Miss vs USCe is the tougher one to parse out.

Ole Miss didn't play quite as tough a schedule but they have the better 'best win' vs UGA.

It won't matter unless USCe beats Clemson but if they do and do it impressively I think they should get in over both OM and Bama.

I'd put OM in over Bama if it came down to it to.

We have no business being in the CFBP.

When you crap the bed like we did in Norman we should be permanently eliminated no matter what anybody else does.

I've never been more ticked off about a loss.

It's just completely inexcusable.
