Game Thread: Official Post Game Thread - Bama vs. Clemson, Round Two...

Jalen regressed as the defenses started getting tougher late in the season. He just never learned to throw the ball. And he has no shot of completing a pass on an unplanned roll out. 15 games and this is what he has. I seriously doubt that he will get better with more time, but maybe having Tua pushing for the starting job will help with that.

This is going to sound like I am blaming Jalen for the loss, but I am not. The coaches own player development. They have to put him in a position to succeed. They did not. And he just wasn't good enough to over come both his personal weaknesses and the play calling that exacerbated it.

What could have been regarded as the best defense ever will now be set aside as not good enough to finish. After all, in spite of your offensive struggles, how many 3 and out possessions did it force in this game? If they had to defend too many plays then it is at least partially their fault. Scoring drives aside, many of the drives that ended in punts could have ended sooner. They only gave up 7 points in the first half, but they gave up over 200 yards and allowed Clemson to control the clock. This before they were exhausted.

This was a team loss. Clemson was just better on this day.

Not only did the defenses get tougher, but they had more game film to study and to plan against his strengths. I am hopeful he can make significant progress with a spring and fall camp as the #1 starter, and hopefully be pushed as well by the incoming QBs. He is a work in progress in the passing game, but frankly that should not be a surprise to anybody.

yeah but what about the other 57 minutes that led up to that??? he has got to develop as a passer...or I hope we find someone that can
Exactly. I said it before the game, our offense had to make tough throws and convert 3rd downs. For the majority of the game we didn't do that. Heck we didn't even make most of the easier throws. We have to get better for next season because we will not have this defense. Our defense will be good because it always is, but we are about to lose more talent than ever on that side of the ball.

Congrats to Clemson, enjoy your win.

Dabo caught lightning in a bottle with Watson. He was the best player on the field and should have won the Heisman this year, but he's gone after this game and Clemson will revert back to the team we're glad we're not. Don't expect them back in the Natty anytime soon. We however, will be back and often. RTR!!!

And btw. Nike whoever designed those hats and shirts needs to be fired. Ugly doesn't describe them, and yes, I would say the same thing in we would have won.

I believed in Hurts after watching him at A-Day (his ability at least, though I feared his development if he played as a true freshman). I think some people underestimate what playing as a true freshman can do to the development of a QB. Not only do you forgo that extra year of eligibility, but you lose a year of focusing on the fundamentals. Once Hurts is out there on the field, he can't relearn to do things, he can't practice, he has to make a play the best way he knows how. This means he can reinforce bad habits, but what else can you do? Once he's the guy you have to go with him. I hope that Hurts can use the off-season (and then his time with Sark) to work on the fundamentals. I think he looks amazing when one remembers he's on year one. No Alabama QB (in my time), none, looked like Hurts did as a true freshman. If he can simply develop in the same way that AJ, Blake of Coker did, if he can just improve from one year to the next he absolutely has a chance to shatter all the Alabama records.

This post is very accurate.

This is one of those games that we could have won, but with the way we played on offense, we should not have won, and didn't. Period. We must hold our heads high and be grateful to be THE team that everyone wants to beat.

A few random thoughts:

1. Congrats to Clemson for a hard-fought win. Watson took an absolute beating and still pulled off the win.
2. Congrats to our players and staff for an excellent season. This game really stings, but we are still in the middle of a great and glorious era of Bama football, and it's nowhere close to being done.
3. I consider it perversely gratifying that the entire world and media are happier that Bama lost than that Clemson won. We are the Duke of college football.
4. Bama is far more likely to be back in the CFP next season than Clemson. This was their last, best shot for a while. They lose a ton of talent, especially Watson, Williams, and many others.
5. Expect a wide-open QB competition in the spring and fall. As great and as talented as Hurts is, he has deficiencies as a passer that finally caught up to us tonight. It'll be interesting to see if Tua can push him.
6. I hope that when Bama returns to the CFP, Big 12 officiating crews are nowhere to be found. They weren't why Bama lost, but they sure didn't help.
7. While I congratulate Dabo for the win, I do hope Bama never seriously considers him to succeed Saban. I think the man's a doofus, more lucky than good. Jeremy Pruitt would be an interesting option in my own worthless opinion, more in the Saban mold.
8. I lurk way more than I post on here, but I really enjoy these boards and the lively and intelligent discussion here.
Roll Tide Forever!

Well I hate to break it to y'all, but I'd estimate >98% of college football fandom is celebrating right now. The "big bad wolf" lost.

Don't believe me? Go check tRant. Or pretty much any forum for that matter.

Better to be hated than pitied...

I think you're right honestly. I understand how that goes but the thing that surprises me is this is a program that does focus on trying to do things the right way. Would think they would have more people that would pull for them just because of that but it is what it is. The program/philosophy reminds me of the Spurs, which is also one of my favorite programs, but they oftentimes get passed up in love for teams like the Warriors and the Cavs. Go figure

We beat the living crap out of Watson and he never relented. That guy is a great college QB. I take my toupee off to him.

Offensive gameplan was horrible and we still almost won.

D did everything they could possibly do.

This is still the best Saban D ever in my mind!

Congrats Clemson and ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDEEEEEEEEEEEE ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

Traveling South Texas on business all day, the radio had the Rich Eisen show on. Their poll had 75% rooting for Clem.

Barring injuries, they will most likely be the third best team in the ACC next year. I'm thinking they lose to both FSU and Louisville next year.
