QB Competition 2018

He might not be but I am. I am not a CLK fan but I just don't think CSS was ready. People have discussed this in the past about speed of play calling. Just looking at how fast CSS got play's in verses CLK. That one thing alone left time on the clock for Clemson at the end of the game.
So are you saying Kiffin should have been coaching in the NC game last season?

I think we showed that against Clemson last year. Bo had 16 carries for 93 yards.
This year Harris had 6 carries for 51 yards averaging 8.5 and Bo had 7.7 yards per carries.

The key to beating Clemson is to not get cute with our players, and let those guys make the plays.
Exactly! Pound between the tackles with D and Bo...zone reads with D only! Stretches/pitches to Bo. Bo needs the ball going downhill. Give em breaks with whatever you wanna do with JJ. Just run the ball.

I know that you guys love what Bo did last year, but I really hope that DH is the main man this year.

I hope Harris get a chance to show he can handle it... Jacob and Bo needs to do their part... We need to do some serious damages with those three.
I wonder if their carries were down this year to save them for the playoffs. I know that they have really been using that program to keep up with performance and it just seems to me that maybe they wanted to have them both fresh for the playoffs. I am just reaching here but you never know.

Disagree with the bold part. We averaged 8 YPC against AU and the AU front 7 is on par with the Clemson front 7. I think we'll have a little more success with direct, downhill runs between the tackles than the wide stuff you're talking about. The finesse plays generally don't work against a defense the caliber of Clemson. Have to attack them straight up and hit them in the mouth. If that doesn't work then it doesn't work but we won't beat Clemson by running jet sweeps..

Plus, we averaged 6.5 yards per carry against them last year.

I said between the tackles, but we will see. They have the best defensive line in the game. You can beat them running off tackle, attacking the places where the DEs would have been if they were not so agressive. But if you try to run up the middle on them, prepare for a lot of 3 and outs.

I absolutely agree with each of you that we have to run the ball to beat Clemson. I believe we have to make a commitment to that, even if it doesn't work early in the game.

But at some point our QB is going to have to move the chains and make some explosive plays with his arm.

Don't think we beat Clemson, Georgia or Sooners by being one dimensional.

I agree. I think Coach Saban said that Damien was dinged up in the play-off and this was probably why he did not get a lot of carries after Bo got hurt against Clemson. All of them should be fresh.

Pretty sure we could beat the Sooners by having our O-line turn around and fart on the Sooner D-line. That alone would be enough force to blow them off the ball and we could just run for 600 yards and shorten the game by an hour and a half. Defense is a theoretical concept for Big-12 teams.

I think our best chances of moving the ball through the air is having Jalen and Daboll sit down and have Jalen tell him which plays (passing plays of course) he likes and is the most comfortable with. It's crunch time. This isn't the time to ask him to do things he's proven over the course of the season he's simply not good at. We need to ride our rb's, dink and dunk in the passing game with high % passes, hopefully creating some one on one situations in open space. There's no need for us to continue to try to ask Jalen to run passing plays that require skills (mulitple downfield quick read progressions etc.) he simply isn't proficient at. If we do that we're asking for a repeat of last year's third down conversion rate which was something like 2-15. If we can't win with our RB's then we simply aren't good enough to be champions. Because the strength of our offense are those "haw-sez" in the backfield who wear #34, #9 & #8. It's time to let them do their thing and let the chips fall where they may.

I really hope they use Jacobs creatively. He almost always brings a spark to the offense when they use him. I'm pretty sure he was our most effective runner between the tackles vs Auburn as well so it's not like you need to create plays for him. I agree that DH should get the most carries but I still think Jacobs could be the wild card we need to win this game. I don't think he has been used enough this year.

This would be the "safest" plan, no doubt. If I'm guessing what we do, this is probably it knowing CNS's aversion to drastic change. I'm just not sure "safe" is good enough even with the "haw-sez" we have in the backfield if we can't use the qb as a weapon.

Has this thread turned into a Bama vs Clemson thread? I keep looking to see if there is anything interesting about 2018 QB competition. I get it that this has pretty much run it's course but Bama vs Clemson has a thread.

This is at least partially because what happens next year will, at a minimum, be heavily influenced by what happens in the playoffs this year. They are not separate conversations.

You can still be very dangerous in the passing game without it being complex. Auburn tore us up in the passing game with one WR and one RB. Timing of plays (when to call what) is crucial to a play working, or even an entire game plan. It was amazing everytime Pruitt sent a multiple player blitz off one side Auburn had an underneath receiver crossing as the safety valve. They also made hay on getting the ball out quick to a WR on a one to two yard pass and letting the wr's athletic ability get three to four yards a pop. They didn't hurt is with an air raid of long passes. They killed us with a thousand paper cuts. Situational play calling is key. It will be key in this game as well.

In fairness this thread started right after the Barn game when most of us felt like we were destined to miss the playoffs. IIRC, some posters even said they didn't want to get into the playoffs for fear we'd get exposed.

Then it all started to change to "now" (2017 and next game) when we saw the possibility of getting into the CFP.

Hope you are correct. Theoretically, it'll work. There's just one word you used that give's me pause (bolded): "quick"

He can do that. Where he's not "quick" is making downfield reads and getting the ball out on time or even throwing it at all. But he's more than capable of snap throwing a ball out to a WR.

Good coaches find ways to win.

Are these types of throws "pre-snap" reads? Or, is there a signal that comes from the sideline to indicate the hot route?

I have not read all the post on this.... but one thing to keep in mind in talking about Jalen and his passing game.... he has only thrown 1 int all year... the lack of turnovers in passing is significant....I would much rather watch Jalen take a sack or run for no gain that to throw two or three pics..... turnovers are huge! Even back in High School, Jalen was a winner..... and he still is. Tua could be great, and hopefully we will see him in the future..... but losing 2 games in two years...... WONDERFUL.... when we beat Clemson, then let's talk....about this...
