It works, as Slab has said frequently - his wife's family chooses to believe, although they're in the west, not under Putin's thumb...

Not only her family, but many in the Russian-speaking community(most of which hail from former Soviet Republics that ethnic Russians look down their noses at). It is a loyalty that goes back to Stalin, The Great Patriotic War.

TW, is it unusual for POW's to be transported in a cargo plane? Why not use a passenger jet and reserve the cargo plane for military purposes like moving troop transports, tanks, artillery, etc.?
Hard to say. The simple answer is that a Russian Air Force jet is paid for. Plus, given Russia's rail network, I do not think a lot of cargo gets moved by air, whereas a civilian air liner has to be paid for (and may not want to go that close to the fighting).
As for prisoner movement, if I was managing Ukrainian prisoners in Russian hands, I stash them someplace far to the north so if they escaped, they'd die of exposure. If that were the case, flying them might make sense.

The US is not the only country that will hold a presidential election this year. Russia will elect a president in March. Normally the candidates are Putin and the communist party candidate who dutifully loses to the boss.
This year a guy name Nadezhdin has gotten the 200,000 signatures he needs to get on the ballot. I will guarantee you that he will be charged with some serious crime, convicted, and not to be on the ballot come election time (if he does not fallout of a window, or die in a plane crash). Navalny has urged voters to vote for anybody but Putin, and, if a liberal party candidate gets on the ballot, Navalny will urge everyone to vote for him.
‘I don’t know why I’m not arrested.’ Anti-war presidential candidate ignites Russian anger
If he survives to election time, if could make the ballot stuffing more difficult.

Thee VTSIOM polling agancy does real public opinion polling.
A Russian journal Rossisskaya Gazeta did an interview with the VTsIOM director. Here are some highlights.
The main reason for the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive: "the stamina of our soldiers, their self-sacrifice, perseverance and firmness in defense."

On the mood of the country: "there is a mood to fight as long as necessary to achieve our goals. This is exactly the attitude the president gives, and it gets a good response. We have a decent margin of safety, everyone is already convinced of this. On the contrary, our opponents have a much shorter reserve of patience. Western sponsors are only looking for a reason to turn away from Kyiv, because their bet on it did not work. They no longer expect quick results from him and are switching to other directions, fortunately the number of hot spots around the world is only growing. In this sense, Russia now has very lucky cards in its hands: our stakes in the Ukrainian conflict are significantly higher than the enemy’s, and we are ready to go to the end, but they are no longer."

On the upcoming Russian presidential election: "Today, the demand for change has disappeared in society. There is, of course, a demand for a positive image of the future - the direction in which our country should strategically go. But this is more of a medium-term perspective, but in the short-term everything is clear: who we are, who we are with, who we are against. In this sense, there is no demand for change or new faces; the demand for stability dominates. That’s why everyone is consolidating around Putin. The country struggles, fights, survives. Putin is perceived as a strategist, diplomat and visionary politician, endlessly loyal to his country. He does not work for his pocket, not for his “family”, he works for the country..."

I relay these opinions, not because it is reality, but because this is the stuff that gets passed on to Putin and this was published in Rossisskaya Gazeta now to influence the Russian population to vote for Putin in March..

For the first time in the history of world wars, as a result of a group attack by naval drones, which were directed via a space satellite, a warship that was on the move in the open sea in full combat readiness was destroyed. On February 1, 2024, marine drones of the Group 13 unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine destroyed a Russian project 12411 missile boat in the Black Sea near the protected naval base on Lake Donuzlav in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Project 12411 missile boat, with a displacement of up to 500 tons, with a crew of 40 people, armed with P-270 Mosquito anti-ship missiles. Judging by the video, a group of at least five naval drones of the GUR MOU infiltrated the Donuzlav base of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation unnoticed, and the drones successively attacked the missile boat, which was apparently conducting combat patrols and defense of the base. It is worth noting that the Russian intelligence did not notice the approach of the drones. The crew of the missile boat, according to the GUR it was "Ivanovets", judging by the video, noticed the approach of the drones visually, and the boat was on the move at the time of the attack and could maneuver. A rocket boat can develop a speed of more than 30 knots, and simply run away from drones. But "Ivanovets" did not have time to gain speed. The nose 76 mm anti-aircraft artillery installation AK-176, as can be clearly seen, was in the marching position, that is, it did not turn on and did not open fire. It is also not noticeable that the Russians managed to bring into battle two 30 mm anti-aircraft artillery installations AK-630, which are capable of conducting dense fire at moving targets at short distances. But apparently, machine-gun fire was opened on the drones from close range by the next watch. However, due to the small size, speed and maneuverability of the drones, the Russians failed to hit them. The well-chosen tactics of the attack by the Group 13 commanders is admirable - the first drone hit the stern of the boat from the starboard side in order to disable the propellers. The boat could not develop full speed, but did not stop. Then the second drone also hit the propellers, but from the left side. With these two blows, the boat was reliably deprived of motion and maneuverability. After that, the ship was competently finished. The third drone hit the middle of the hull under the Mosquito missile launchers and caused a large tear in the port side. Video from this drone is not shown. But the results of the hit are visible from the camera of the fourth drone, which the operator directed directly into the ravine from the third drone in the same place. The explosion from the fourth drone was fatal for the ship. As a result of the impact, four Mosquito missiles were detonated, the total weight of which is 4 tons each. The rocket boat "Ivanovets" was literally blown to pieces, there was almost no chance for the crew to save themselves. The brilliant success of Ukrainian soldiers, the command and operators of Group 13 GUR of the MoD showed a high level of intelligence, planning, training and operation management. Attack tactics deserve to be studied as a model. It is worth noting that the aim of the attack was not to defeat, but rather to completely destroy the ship, so a whole group of drones was dispatched to reliably perform the task, which allowed to inflict maximum losses on the enemy.

The drone video is amazing, especially the first part of the video where the drone flies into the gaping hole in the ship.

The Russian navy has lost a bunch of ships by now. It seems like we’re watching one sink every few weeks. I have read that 20% of the Black Sea fleet has been destroyed. And Ukraine doesn’t even have a navy.

Problem is how cheap and easy it is to implement.

It's fun seeing it happen to the Russkies, won't be fun when we're on the receiving end...
Amen to that, CA. They're cheap. Anybody who can play a video game can control them. They're relatively small. So the bad guys can send droves of them, and there's no way at least some won't get through.

Yeah, when it's the Russkies getting it in the chops, it's fun. It's a matter of when, not if, we're on the business end of one of these attacks.

For the drones that are human controlled, the weakness is the link to the human. Jam that signal (or spoof it and make the drone think you are its controller), and the drone will stop being effective.
The scary bit is autonomous drones. You launch it, give it enough computing power to analyze the image itself, and tell it to kill anyone wearing this type of clothing, or everyone driving a truck, or whatever. Those have nothing to jam.
