I'm sure they'll lose some in the portal, regardless, particularly on the defensive side. Say what you want about Harbaugh, but he's one of the best in the game today. Regardless of familiarity and whatnot, so to go from him, to a guy who has only been an interim head coach, is a clear downgrade, and if I'm thinking it, then some of the players will be thinking it.If Michigan promotes from within....yeah, they'll lose all those upper classmen that are out of eligibility....but they won't have a mass exodus like we have.
Oh I agree with the expanding playoff we have a legitimate shot at making a run at a playoff spot, I am just saying we don’t know enough about this team yet except we have great leaders on this team who are determined to prove Bama isn’t going anywhere. I am very optimistic about this team and coach. I am just being realistic in year one because how many first year coaches have ever won a title. 3 if I am not mistaken and last was Coker with Miami Hurricanes 2001 I think. The year before with Butch Davis they were number 2 in the country. Butch left for Browns in kind of a shocker to Miami alumni.I think not everyone thinks of being "in the hunt" the same way.
The playoffs will be expanding to 12 teams, so making the playoffs could constitute being in the hunt, even if the odds aren't great.
There is a difference between "we could maybe win it" and "We should win it" and being "in the hunt" covers both categories of confidence.
With what Texas, Ohio State, and Georgia are returning and spending on their rosters, winning the national championship is going to be a tall order, but making the playoffs and having the opportunity to catch a few breaks like we had this past year is not out of the realm of possibility.
They also have the potential of sanctions coming from Big 10 and NCAA… I mean Harbaugh is even trying to get it put it in his contract that he can’t be fired from anything that comes from this investigation. If that is the feeling they will leave in droves in my opinion.I'm sure they'll lose some in the portal, regardless, particularly on the defensive side. Appears to be no longer an issue. Jacobs has withdrawn from the transfer portal.
Preach on brother! No truer words could have been spoken!!! Saban is the GOAT, he’s always thinking! RTR!!!I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as it could have been regarding the timing. Saban was retiring sooner than later, and it just so happened it was this offseason. He retired soon enough for us to hire probably one of the top five coaches in the country. Not to mention that apparently, DeBoer was Byrne's first choice.
If you want to see "worst" timing, get ready to see Michigan when Harbaugh takes the Chargers job and leaves them in late January or early February JUST BEGINNING a coaching search. That's not counting having to deal with recruits entering the transfer portal. Saban gave us enough time to hire one of the top coaches, assemble a staff and get stability to begin preparing for 2024. Michigan is about to be a stage 5 crapshow.
well, there are 5 starters, 6 if you count Amos since he started in dime.
We had 23 leave in 2022 and 21 in 2023
The biggest blow is at DB. Bond feels replaceable so does Niblack tbh. Proctor hurts but again I think replaceable.well, there are 5 starters, 6 if you count Amos since he started in dime.
Seth, Bond, Niblack, Proctor, Downs, Amos.
The bigger thing is also who was likely to be starting since we have a lot leaving for the NFL also.
Likely very likely Dez Ricks and Little in CB and nickel roles. Possible Preston. So let's settle on 8 guys that were slated as starters. That's a third of our projected starting lineup - that's not insignificant, especially when several of those guys backups also hit the road.
Don't forget Jake Pope. he was starting to flash a bit. He never would have bumped Downs, but with Downs gone now, he had as good a chance as anyone of grabbing a safety role, or in the new system possibly the nickel spot (if moore moved to S).The biggest blow is at DB. Bond feels replaceable so does Niblack tbh. Proctor hurts but again I think replaceable.
But Amos, Downs, Dez Ricks, Little? The combination of all of them leaving is a big blow.
Well, I hope we don`t sit on our hands and fail to take advantage of said crapshow, if it occurs. Not in the mood to watch Texas, UGA, LSU, UTe, the barn take 5-10 each. That`s an exaggeration, I know ( but not a very big one, it seems! ).I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as it could have been regarding the timing. February 9.I probably should know this but exactly when does the 30 day window close?
CNS retired January 10th. So February 10th...?I probably should know this but exactly when does the 30 day window close?
It's impossible to grade our net portal losses until after the April window where we think we'll be net gainers. Two of these players, Seth and Little, had already left before Coach. Seth and Bonds have already been replaced with comparable players. No doubt the secondary losses hurt, and will need to be a focus in April.well, there are 5 starters, 6 if you count Amos since he started in dime.

I'll go one step further and say we won't truly be able to grade our net portal losses and gains until the season plays out. It is generally assumed the guys who are staying and the guys who are being brought in aren't going to perform up to the standard of those who left would have. However, what if that doesn't turn out to be the case? What if we get into the season and the WR from UW that transferred in absolutely balls out, and Kendrick Law turns into our "Deebo Samuel" and has an all-American year? It's impossible to grade our net portal losses until after the April window where we think we'll be net gainers.
