UA - OM Postgame Thread...

After watching the post play during the UNC game tonight it is clear that we are just not at that level with our young guys.

Even the officiating was on a different level.

I missed the game. I was at the softball game and listened on the radio. Chris made it clear the officials were not calling it both ways. I heard when Releford had a 4-1 break and took it to the hole without dishing. Stewart said he had 3 guys who could have dunked, but instead he forced the shot. There in fellas lies the problem. I think Coach Grant called it entitled.

I still think we are in, but a loss to USC could change things. We had the chance to take this scenario out of the equation, but choked every time we the opportunity to to control our own destiny. No leadership on this team period. You can't ask freshman to lead you.

My only beef w/ Releford is he gets too far in the lane without knowing what he wants to do with the ball.

Perfect storm:

They played well
We didn't
Our guys are sick
Officiating

I'd love for someone to do a psychological studying on the phenomenon of homecooking, but I'm damn sure we don't get it in Coleman. That's the most frustrating thing - bad officiating can be directly responsible for the other team putting points on the board - this makes for a hard game to watch. I still like our chances against USCe and then another win on Friday. We'll be fine.

I spent the day car shopping, and finally buying, with my son and didn't get to see any of the game. And from the sound of things it may have been a blessing. I had real doubt about our chances of winning at the Tad, even when officiating is only somewhat biased, which appears not to have been the case today. Disappointing for certain.

Nothing to do now but prepare for the SEC tourney and make amends for both today, and the disaster that was the USCe game.

Disagree in that Steele is a leader, but you're mostly right. That said, we're a very young team. Growing pains.

I'm not picking on Releford, but this has been happening all season with a variety of different players. I believe there are some guys who don't need to even be on the team. When JaMychal came back we seem to throw the ball to him and expect him to make a play until we panic late in the shot clock. In reality, I'm not sure we aren't a better team without him.

I'm not hating on J-Mike, because he usually plays hard, but the thought occurred to me today...

I think Steele would like to lead the team, but usually your team leader is one of your better players. I love Steele, but a leader has to demand accountability from his teammates at times and I don't see Andrew doing that.

I watched Grant's press conference and he is clearly frustrated with this team to the point I almost think he wants the season to end.

We aren't getting the ball quick enough down in the LP or not getting it there at all. The HP is there to keep the 2 top defenders occupied and the LP moves with the ball movement behind the zone. The other 3 should be looking to pass and cut to the basket.

As RJ said, we moved so much faster when Green was on the bench a few weeks ago. Not that there is a solution there, but it was glaringly obvious.

If we continue to play with JaMychal and continue the same offensive tendencies that I've seen the last 2 games, We are in big trouble. We won't go very far in either tourney if we make it.

Maybe we should put him @ 3 and bring in Engstrom @ 4 and Gueye @ 5. Not sure how much speed that would give up on transition though.

I was looking at the boxscore, here are some telling stats:

Green was 5-8 shooting. I love the percentage, but come on..he only got 8 touches? Seriously? That's not good. He is the best offensive weapon on the team, yet took the third most shots (and less then ten touches at that). The commentators said we needed to play more inside/out, and I agree. Green needs more touches.

Ben Eblen in his 13 minutes of play logged one shot attempt. Which gives him a whooping 17 for the year (he has made 4 of those for 23.5% shooting). He hasn't MADE a shot since 1/11 against LSU.

Our bench mustered a wonderful 3 points (on 1/13 shooting). If we combined the bench's stat line it would have had 3 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast.

Trevor Releford seemed to gain some steam as the game went on. He was our leading scorer tonight with 12 points. The thing that concerns me, and it may just be because of the zone defense, was his ast to TO ratio. He had 0 ast, and 3 TO's. Though I don't know how many he missed on due to missed shots (no advanced metrics).

27-15 That is the difference in foul numbers. I think had Grant been 100% (he was obviously not) we could have added another foul or two (I would have had Technicals called on me if I were him). Mississippi only shot 47% from the free throw line (which got a bump at the end of the game), but we didn't help ourselves out because we shot 57.1% (8-14).

Just thinking out loud, we had good movement to the basket while JG was out. We had good movement the first game he was back and coming off the bench. Then, he starts the last two games and we've gone stagnant again. Of course, our outside shooting was coming along and that helps worlds with the inside game. The last two games, we drop back to 25% or lower again on threes. We honestly need to recruit one decent spot-up shooter, somebody to play the role Rotnei whatshisname played with the Hogs last year...

I actually like the combo of Green (at 4) and Jacobs (at 5), and then bring in Engstrom to spell Jacobs. If we had Green, Engstrom, and Gueye on the floor we would have nearly zero offense on the floor. We can't score as it is...

Rotnei "Trailer Park" Clarke transferred and will be playing at Butler next year

Further thinking out loud....if the other team is going to zone...just put Cooper and Hank in and let them shoot some 3s and try to get hot. The other stuff is clearly not working.

Someone out of that 2 has to get a dunk or lay-up on a double on JG. Only problem remains not having an outside threat.
