Bama Game Thread: Official Postgame Thread - Bama vs. Michigan...

Thing is, the RB is the flat is a pass that Milroe either fails to hit a lot of the time (happened earlier in this game) or takes too long to throw so the defense recovers and forces a short to no gain play (also happened a few times this game). So while Roydell may have theoretically had the best chance to score, I’d have been really nervous when that pass came out.
Having to go for it on 4th and goal should make you nervous enough.

The offensive failures in this game were many and varied.

I waited a while to post.

Facts: This team made it farther than last year's. They avenged our two losses from the previous year to hated rivals. They won at the barn. They went undefeated in conference and won the SEC - over a team with a nearly 30 game winning streak. They lost to two playoff teams in games that could have gone the other way.

We also featured a quarterback who was a first time starter with a first year OC and was among national leaders in passing rating for most of the season. He threw at a 70 percent completion percentage with no picks in the game against Michigan, all while fielding the snap off the turf half the time. I, for one, am very much looking forward to his return next year. I doubt the rest of our league is.

I know the loss is raw for many of us but the hyperbole about Monday's outcome is just too much. In my view, we had a very vanilla and tight offensive gameplan for Michigan. There are things that worked for us during the season that we didn't even try the other night. I suppose Saban saw how fundamentally tough Michigan looked and decided safe and fewer mistakes was the gameplan. It didn't work. Anyway, it seemed like they had the perfect counter for everything we tried. I call that being outcoached. That's okay. It happens sometimes.

Combine that with our heroic defense being gassed late in the game and there we are.

This team didn't make it all the way, but it was still among Bama's best. Are we so spoiled that we're going to eat our own when we don't win a NC every year? The players work hard to put a great team out there for us and they're probably listening... So I say it was a great season, Roll Tide and let's go all the way next year.

Excellent post, and fully agreed. We are a spoiled fan base. My four years at UA were the 2003-2006 seasons and I still remember how it felt to go 6-6 and be relieved to sneak into the Music City or Independence Bowl. This was an extremely satisfying season as far as I'm concerned - undefeated in conference play, revenge wins over UT and LSU, a fourth straight win over Auburn (which has never happened in my lifetime), knocking off UGA, and winning a conference title. All of this after those first three weeks of the season where we looked like a 7-5 or 8-4 team. CNS was on record after Monday night saying that this will go down as one of his favorite teams that he's ever coached just based on what they accomplished relative to where they started, and the sheer amount of improvement they made over the course of the season. I'm inclined to agree with him.

I understand the bar is very high at Alabama and any season that doesn't end with a national title can be seen as a disappointment, but I'm also in the "enjoy it while we can" camp. The transfer portal, NIL and conference expansion are going to make things more difficult going forward. Then we'll have to deal with the eventual retirement of CNS and hope that we don't bungle the replacement hire, which is much easier said than done......

RTR.

I meant to add some stats for levity's sake: the final collective record of our opponents for 2023 is 119-64, which is a 65% win percentage. We lost by a combined 17 points to teams ranked #1 and #3 in the final pre-playoff polls. We had wins against teams ranked #5, #11, #13, and #21 - the last three of those by 14 points each and one game featuring our sometimes-maligned QB outdueling the Heisman winner.

That's a dang good season that (almost) any team in the country would envy.

Not having two plays to go to in those situations is an issue. Not sure if that’s a Milroe issue or our offensive coordinator not being prepared.
Question I don't know the answer to: does the staff trust Milroe enough to let him audible? I don't know that I've seen him call an audible in 2022 or 2023.

I don't think Milroe ever had that option. He either ran the play as called all the time or we lined up and looked to the sideline. They weren't going to let Milroe audible. If he isn't making presnap reads he shouldn't be.

Sounds like Seth was doing the presnap reads.

That makes it even more astonishing that we went with Milroe instead of Simpson. I get it, he was the easiest and quickest path to winning, or it seemed that way in September. I didn’t think it was the correct decision then and still feel this way although I swallowed my tongue and supported the team.

So you were willing to live with a possible 3 or 4 loss season to have another QB running the offense? I'm not sure many Bama fans would be willing to do that.

Is it dumping on Milroe or is it trying to diagnose where the problems are? While there are a couple, I don't see many people dumping on him, but ignoring weaknesses isn't how you get better.
posting the same critiques over and over seems to go well beyond diagnosis.

and us getting better is not really a function fans diagnosing weaknesses. that is saban, the staff and the team’s job

We don’t know that would be the case. Imagine if we had a qb that could audible out of bad plays and see the whole field to hit open receivers. Would the Auburn game even been close? Would we have struggled against Arkansas?

I mean, this is what discussion boards are for. If we only talked about our job as fans there'd be no reason to have a forum.

You notice I said "possible". Even coming out of the USF game I believe I posted we were going to lose 3 to 4 games with the status quo (No improvement with Milroe). So he had break out games with marked improvement each and every game afterward. It's fine that after the season there are many that can say that he has hit a "ceiling", but that's all hindsight. If you are the coach and you see how he has won the team over and is improving, then you have to go with what's winning on the field. None of us has a crystal ball, just gut feelings. As a fan, I have to go with what the coaches see in practice and from their POV because they are with the players pretty much all of the time. You have to go with what's winning on the field today. All I hear is that QB X isn't getting a fair chance to prove himself! Do we know how QB X is doing in practice or the other intangibles that get you a starting job on the field? I'm not sure how many of us really know what goes into that decision. Other than Josh Pate, he knows everything!
