Bama-Vandy Postgame Thread...

And with that one game, and in particular how it ended, 'Anthony Grant' and 'Tim Higgins' are trending on twitter right now.

I saw where this is Higgins 5th game in 7 days with a pretty tough travel schedule. Traveled to Illinois, FL, W.Virginia, Mississippi & TN in last week. Mike Kitts was on his 4th straight night of games, and 5th in 6 days. This is Higgins 39th game this season but his boy Kitts has already done 73. I mean, do they not think about fatigue when they set these ref assignments up?

Coach Grant is the man! I hate losing a game like this but you have to remember its basketball. There is always a tourny at the end. I think this game should set in concrete the retirement of that white haired ref. But if he was the only ref to blow a call, (he was drunk), I would be upset. Hope the team shakes this expected loss off, by most, and makes another long run win streak. ROLL TIDE!!!

Tough loss. I'm sure there will be plenty of "those cheatin' refs cost us the game" posts, and while I thought the whole game was officiated poorly, that's not what cost us the game. When you're on the road in the SEC you've gotta expect some calls to go against you. Poor officiating may be an excuse, but it's not the reason. I'd bet the thing CAG points to is giving up 81 points. This one is over and there's nothing we can do about it. Now let's beat the tar out of OM Saturday. RTR

don't agree with you on that one.........it's not that the officiating was bad, it's WHEN the officiating was bad!

Not to mention the mugging that Mitchell took under the basket going up for a shot with about 2 mins. to go.

I've been following Alabama BB since the Rocket 8 and it has always been tuff at Vandy. They are always competitive and difficult to beat. We have gone there with superior teams only to be thwarted by unfavorable calls. When defensive flops were allowed, it could get downright comical. Sonny Smith once joked that sometimes all 5 vandy players would flop on a drive to the basket. As well as Vandy played tonight it was going to be a task to beat them. You have to keep enough margin to keep a ref's call from deciding the game. We need to shake it off and take care of Ole Miss. They are playing great.

No wonder why we can't win at Vandy. Absolutely horrendous officiating. The team played hard with a lot of heart. Grant did another good job coaching. Unfortunately, we couldn't hit a three; but with that said, the lousy officiating in the last minute determined the winner of this match. I hope we get matched up with Vandy in the SEC tournament. Our guys should have some added incentive for payback.

i love the fire from coach grant! Should have been a foul, no doubt about it. These things happen, esp on the road. This team should be undefeated in league pay....period. Gotta keep that fire for Ole Miss. This one doesn't make or break us anyway...keep playing the way we've been playing and we end up with at least 11 SEC wins. Should be in the mix for the big dance, if not, NIT bound. Either way- love this coaching staff and love this team. I couldnt be more proud of the fight and tenacity that this team shows.:BigA:

While the calls at the end of the game didn't favor Bama at all, Vandy shot 9-19 (47%) from behind the arc. Bama was 2-15. The officials didn't cause that. The calls that went against us at the end kept us from winning in spite of the combination of great Vandy shooting and poor Bama D. If we had held them to even 10 points above our season average, we would have won easily, and bad calls wouldn't have mattered. You give up 81 points on the road in the SEC, you're not gonna win many, and it wasn't the refs that caused that. When games are decided by calls at the end, the home team usually has the advantage. It shouldn't have been that close.

I was really impressed with the team tonight. If you told me we were going to give up 81 points in Nashville, I would have told you we lost by 15+. This team has made huge strides. It was ugly, but we were able to score with a good offensive team. I'm not going to harp on the refs, but a couple things go differently at the end and we win that game.

Even with the loss, our RPI improves, and we looked pretty good against a respected team on national TV. I think it goes a long way to help us get our dancing shoes.

I thought the effort was great. Vandy was just simply hot as a firecracker.

I want us to completely forget this one and to get ready for Ole Miss because they are playing outstanding basketball over the last couple of weeks. Don't let one tough loss turn into two.

I hit record on the game at the half so my wife and I could watch last nights Modern Family episode. We've just about caught up with live play when the DVR suddenly cut off with about 75 seconds to go. NOOOOOOOO. The recording had ended and we were suddenly put in that post DVR time warp and into James Spann's weather report. That was a long 10 minutes until we could get to the sports segment. They did show the out of bounds play, but were zoomed way out.

The thing I liked is we never gave up and kept fighting. We'd get down and then chip away. When Taylor fouled out I thought we were in business for sure. We always make Vandy look like NBA 3 point shooters and tonight was no exception....they just didn't get 100 tries like they normally do since we actually play defense now. Can any of you imagine a Bama big man hitting about 10 FT's in a row late in the game on the road until now? I couldn't either.

Guys, we have a great great coach in Anthony Grant. You can tell--given the circumstances, this is a well coached team. The players are really buying in. I loved how our team played tonight. While the loss was frustrating, we are definitely on the right track. Green, Releford, Mitchell are flat out ballers. The intensity is definitely there. Its unfortunate such a close game was determined by a bad call. Either way, Im proud of this team. ROLL TIDE

They only showed the replay from the side once. I think its their way of trying to prevent a bigger controversy. But, everyone saw it, except apparently the guy with the whistle.

I am very proud of our team. They played to win last night in the face of blatant b/c. (Bull/crap)

Why are we talking about the 1 absurd call when their last 4 possessions all constituted B/c.
Tony mitchell got clobbered in the face...NO CALL,,,chris hines got a foul called for jockeying for post position, the white guy for vandy got a gimme call, against steele, when NO contact was made, and that charge that was called on trevor, was Preposterous!! Not to mention the no call on the kid for pushing on J green, a tactic he had done all night.. I won't even mention the traveling called on t mitchell, for simply waiving the ball right to left with his hands( a move I use personally, and a move used by M jordan), ok ok I will mention it....

Some of the worst basketball officiating I've ever witnessed, and I've witnessed some atrocities, in my day..
There seriously needs to be some sort of repercussion for these refs for this "butcher job" of a performance. It truly sickens me to know the refs determined this outcome, and a few of them probably had their pockets lined while doing so.

About our team, I have not seen an alabama team play with this much heart, and enthusiasm, since our robert Horry ,spreewell, benoit days(w sanderson). These young men played with a fire in their eyes, and we all SAW WHO really won that game, and I for 1 could not be more proud of our players, and OUR COACH..

A poster already said good job coach grant " i would of got tossed",, I'd like to echo those statements,,,,, GREAT job coach grant,,,,I'd probably went to jail lol...

Keep them fired up Coach, come march it will pay dividends.

Think back: Have we ever seen an Alabama team rip up a zone defense like that with absolutely no outside threat? (Maybe in 1976 with the physical dominance of Leon, Mule, T.R. etc). And that stretch in the second half, when Vandy couldn't get the ball up the court, was as hard an open-court defense as we've seen in way more than a decade.

If JG stays for his senior season, and Cooper, Randolph et al don't lose their shooting eyes all at once, this team will be something truly special in a year's time.

A couple more shooters. One more body underneath. All that effort. Hubba.

Exactly, I think we outscored them 42 -18 in the paint! I think CAG needs a bonus. To me we are ahead of schedule with the program.

My two cents.... the last 30 seconds of officiating were awful, but they certainly didn't cost us the game. If you know this team at all, you know our defense was not up to par last night. Defenders were getting lost, we didn't press until the second half, and a team that is usually among the best in the country defending the three left wide open shooters all night. On the other end of the court, Vandy sat back in a zone daring a team that has no legitimate three point threat to shoot over the zone and we took the bait. There is no reason we should take 15 threes in a game when a team that has legitimate shooters is putting up 19. I honestly look at half of those possessions as turnovers because of the low percentage of hitting those shots. Shot selection at crucial times and poor defense cost us this game. If we change those things, we don't have a reason to yell at the refs because we're up by 10 at the end.

Also, Jamychal was getting destroyed inside early and it took us too long to adjust. His man was posting up about 6 inches from the rim and it wasn't until we put Hines on him that we showed any resistance inside.

thanks for linking the video. Ouch, that one hurt, especially since it looked like he was fouled.

The name of the color commentator escapes me, but didn't he play for Vandy? I thought having a VU/UA announcing team was really cool, especially since Rece gets to into basketball.

I still can't get over how Green kept drawing those fouls and then knocking down those FT's.

Tough loss, officiating didn't help, but a team should never be in a situation to allow the officials to influence the game negatively. We defend the outside shot better and have better movement on offense to create shots in the paint, we win.

I love CAG and hope he continues to get love from our fans. I want to see us mimic the schools that have both strong BB and FB teams along with baseball, softball, gymnastics, etc.
