I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I believe the roster talent thing based on the number of 4- and 5-star recruits is a bit overblown.Amen to that. We supposedly have one of the most talented rosters in CFB. Top 5 in recruiting.
It aint NIL why we are struggling.
It’s possible to have a team full of highly rated recruits, but it’s meaningless if they aren’t the right kind of recruits. Bobby Bowden had some of the best players on paper in college football in his final years, but they were just a collection of players that didn’t mesh into a cohesive team.
Same goes for Mark Richt, who always had great teams on paper. We were pulling great players out of Georgia regularly, but it didn’t seem like there was a lot of competition with UGA for those players at the time (I could be wrong about that) because we were going for a different type of player than they were. When Kirby took over, he started going for the same type of players we were after and we started missing on a lot of players who would have been at Alabama when Richt was at UGA.
I think missing on those players explains a lot of the decline at Alabama; however, we continued to land on top of the recruiting rankings, which further underscores my theory that the talent rankings are of limited value for predicting the quality of a team.
