Random question: Centre, AL Voting

So, i was in Centre, AL on some business, and in almost every yard, there was either a green "vote YES" sign or a red "Vote NO, keep us dry," (or something along those lines)

For those that live there or near there (or if you just know what's going on), just wondering what was on the ballot there that had so many folks interested bc those signs were everywhere

The vote is to determine whether or not alcohol sales should be allowed within the city limits of Centre. The county in which Centre is located is currently a dry county (no alcohol sales allowed).

Hard to believe that we still have this in Alabama. Just goes to show that the religious right still has a firm grip on politics here, because studies have shown that dry counties/cities have higher incident rates of alcohol related accidents. It is actually more dangerous to live in a dry county/city. :cool2:

This sort of unintended consequence is common where feelings are more important than effectiveness.

Something like 26 of 67 Alabama counties are still dry...of course, there's a growing number of dry counties with wet cities...tax revenue related I suppose.

Ah...thanks...that makes sense now...When I say "Dry," it never even crossed my mind to be discussing alcohol...with all the water around there, I thought it had something to do with water supply, the lake, etc

In Louisville Ky. we can and have had wet/dry elections by PRECINCT. Although very rare,recently a predominately Black precinct voted dry because of youths hanging around liquor stores and a 7/11 store. I think Louisville,and possibly Lexington are affected, the rest of the state is by county. I think it should be legal statewide.
