Eli Gold Not Expected To Return To Booth In 2024

As much as I love Eli, I don't see how anyone could pin this on DeBoer. It's Eli's health and work product.
If the announcer is a big concern for DeBoer we made the wrong hire.
The only way DeBoer could have possibly been involved would have been if the two had met and DeBoer would have gotten a bad first impression. Eli did a weekly radio show with Saban and I imagine someone will be doing the same with DeBoer. I doubt however that this happened and think there's a 99% chance that DeBoer had nothing to do with it.
The days of me having to listen to Tide games on radio because 1/2 weren't on TV are long gone, so I've rarely taken in games with Eli Gold but by the same token even when I have, color me a bit underwhelmed. No, I didn't/don't despise the guy, but he has a tinny voice that sounds like it was produced by a computer and designed for AM radio, meaning he would have been perfect to call our games in the 60s and 70s but not so much the last, oh, 20 years or more. (This is not just an Eli/Alabama thing; most of the schools that have a radio voice fella whom I've listened to sound like the medium is stuck in the AM radio days). I thought Jim Fyffe was okay, Larry Munson, and Jack Cristil as well, but wasn't really a fan of the guys who replaced them (I'm sorry, I know this is gonna sound cruel given his current location, but I was never that impressed with Rod Bramlett, either, although next to Stan White he sounds like the best loops of Keith Jackson and John Facenda combined).
Having said that, I also tend to think someone who has been at a place 35 years should be treated with a bit of dignity, too. And maybe it's just me but this "it's hard to work with a different home and road crew," well, the Dodgers did that for years with Vin Scully, but whatever. Indeed, Scully was working partial games in his final years and only at home.
If I hadn't basically left the sport, I'm available, folks, and I can make all 15 games for the right money.
This doesn't rank high up there with things like NIL or free agency or meaningless bowl games or the uselessness of the NZAA, but it's another symbol that we'll be reading about college football right alongside the Ottoman Empire and ABA at some point.

It’s easy to equate this with Ray Perkins/John Forney/Paul Kennedy, but with everything DeBoer has to deal with these days I can’t imagine he had anything to do with this.
There's already a petition on Change.org to bring him back.
I think it’s funny that people think the football coach made this call.
I used to chat some with Eli on Messenger, normally about golf and not football. Hate that we are losing him but retirement really does sound like is a good choice for him to make.
One of the most revolting aspects of our interconnectivity with social media and the Internet is the delusion people have that they are going to change the world with their petitions and complaints.
Most fans don't know about that. I didn't know until I read about it here.

It appears Eli did not leave on his own accord. Listen people we aren't Texas and we aren't Notre Dame. We stand by our people because we are a family. This reeks of corporate decision and not standing by our brother. Why cant Bama be the one school that stands by our people and principles? This decision makes me sick.
Or we could turn that around and ask that hangers-on have some respect for the institution and walk away when it is time without forcing the institution to push them out. I travelled more than normal last football season, and as a result, I listened to several games on the radio. It was almost impossible to follow the game. Eli goes whole sets of downs at times with never mentioning down, distance, yardage gained. And other times, he would only fill in the details of the previous play halfway through the next. So many "the ball carrier made positive yardage" with no indication of who was in the game as running back and if positive yardage was 3 yards or 9.
It was time for him to go. He has been an important part of Alabama football, but seasons change. It is incumbent on all of us to recognize when our season ends and allow an opportunity for the next generation. Look no farther than our politicians for further example.

Great respect for Eli but his best days have come and gone. For several years now his call of the game has been perfunctory and lacked an emotional element. I consider myself lucky to have grown up listening to Forney and then Eli in my adult years - even though I don't listen to many games on the radio these days. Chris does a terrific job, and his enthusiasm is contagious. I enjoy him on the basketball and baseball broadcasts (I watch baseball online). I think he'll be around for a good while and will become a fan favorite.
