The Decline of the DNC IV

For everyone keeping score at home right now, "The Democrats can't win, people hate them."

Of course, when they take control of one or both houses of Congress next year, the same folks who tell us this now will tell us those elections were stolen.

What's hilarious is this: I recall seeing an unfavorability poll around September 2006 or so where basically the Ds were at 68% and the Rs at 69%, which SOUNDS like a wash.

Except the Ds then won both houses about six weeks later and expanded their margin brutally in 2008 to take over the whole government with what appeared for a fleeting moment to be 60 Senate seats.

The Ds were dead in 2005.
The Rs were dead in 2009.

And so it goes, and so it goes.
Vonnegut...

I'm gonna be straightforward here...I don't know what to think about this one.

Sanders wades into one of Democrats' best Senate pickup opportunities - POLITICO

He's endorsing a 40-year-old Marine veteran and oysterman for the Senate race against Susan Collins. The vet is also pro-gun, which isn't going to hurt him with the Democratic electorate in Maine for sure.

The entrenched party establishment by contrast wants to move into the future by replacing the too old (73 by Election Day) Collins with 78-year-old (by Election Day) Democrat Janet Mills, who is the state's current governor.

I have no dog in the fight, except I'm always suspicious when Bernie Sanders is involved. Mills might be the more electable candidate given she's won races in Maine, but it's kinda hard to make age any kind of an issue here, too.

But if Sanders and his picks are going to campaign on "oligarchy," it's too complicated a concept to catch on. You'll have better luck getting a voter to define "socialism" accurately than you will "oligarchy." Plus, I'm always amused by the populist candidates who play on class resentment against the "rich" when they themselves are....you know......rich.

The Maine guy has a campaign video on YouTube. He uses the f word once so I can’t link it although it is bleeped out.

It shows him doing a lot of manly stuff while spouting Democratic talking points.

Depending on which talking points that's not a bad strategy in Maine.

Maine is basically (I simplify, of course) the Oregon of the East Coast (heavily environmentalist, pro-gun). They even have a Portland. The only reason the GOP has a fair to middling chance in Maine is because their Republicans don't tend to be completely insane. (Collins is only partly insane).

Susan Collins is the best example of Republican empty suits. Always fretting when there is some awful move is proposed by Trump/MAGA, yet falling in lock-step when the votes are counted.

Maine is nearly always a blue state. I never understood Susan Collins's long tenure.

Collins' true motive is no different than that of Democrats or other Republicans: stay in office. Outside of that, anything these people do is most likely going to be breathtakingly unethical or tribal.

"Maine is nearly always a blue state" is like the saying "a little bit pregnant."

Maine hasn't had an elected Democratic Senator in 30 years now.
And a Republican was the two-term governor as recently as 2018.
And Golden's district CVI is R plus 6.

I don't dispute Maine Republicans are more liberal than the Reagan Party, but they have a bit of an independent streak (see Angus King as a great example).

As far as her long tenure, she's done the slalom well. I know she's famous for voting in favor of Kavanaugh, but she also voted AGAINST Barrett, voted FOR Jackson (for SCOTUS), and voted to impeach Trump the second time. She was repeatedly endorsed by the pro-LGBT group Human Rights Campaign until her attempt at re-election in 2020.

Nobody has gotten closer to Collins than six points in five elections. That doesn't mean she'll win in 2026, but it DOES mean she is apparently more attuned to her state than her critics.

Or maybe she's able to steal them....

I've always said the funniest thing about the populists who run on this is that they are ALWAYS rich.

AOC appears to have enjoyed ritzy hotels amid 'Fighting Oligarchy' rallies

Of course she did.

This doesn't surprise ANYONE with a brain.

AOC’s campaign shelled out $3,508.92 alone at the Vdara Hotel & Spa — which boasts a five-star relaxation retreat and posh penthouses — in Las Vegas during the tour in March.

I should run for office. If I win. it seems like a quick way to get rich.

Wait is AOC single and into short architects?

I'm not going to link it because of language, but I highly recommend Joe Rogan # 2352 with Texas State Representative James Talarico (D). He's a former middle school teacher and is currently in seminary. I'm about 2 hours in. I've counted about 4 non-Tidefans words so far, so it's not the typical level of JRE language.

Did he say "fudge", in the sense of exclamation when something bad happened?

I've seen that one slip thru the Msg Board Censor Roomba on a few occasions.

He said it a couple of times. Excrement was said a couple of times too, once by Talarico.

The Cliff Notes version of the podcast is that good things happen when you engage people in real life....especially with those you disagree with.

Someone accused him on social media of just wanting to take away everyone's guns. He invited the guy to meet for coffee. They did. They found common ground and each left the conversation better for it.

Am I the only one on Tidefans who has never listened to Joe Rogan ever?

I mean, I know who he is, I could (yes) pick out his picture but the same was true of folks I didn't listen to all that much back in the day like Randi Rhodes or for that matter Howard Stern.

Probably not.

Basically, he has people on from a broad spectrum of society and has a long conversation with them. He likes to find out what makes people tick, what they're interested in, what they believe, and why.

Rogan's podcast is still generally acknowledged as the best out there for a reason. He will let anyone come in and lay out their point without interruption (just don't let him catch you in a lie.) Some of his guests are way, way "out there" and there has been some truly bizarre theories toss out on his show. Still, it's a fun listen.
