Despite a number of scandals in the recent past, including misuse of federal funds and several instances of employees sexually abusing some of the children in its care, Southwest Key continues to operate—and rake in big government checks. Perhaps the most shocking figure was the size of Endeavors’s 2022 contract with the government: a staggering $1.3 billion, by far the largest sum ever granted to an NGO working at the border. (In 2023, Endeavors’ government funds shrank to $324 million because the shelter was closed for six months. Endeavors says this was because the beds were not needed, the border crisis notwithstanding.)

There's a show on National Geographic channel called "To Catch a Smuggler". Today they have had some from the South Pacific episodes. Specifically Auckland Airport in New Zealand.

They just showed a middle-aged couple from Canada who accidentally left a banana in their luggage. Banana confiscated and a $400 fine - no exceptions.

Also an elderly man trying to bring in a little pot - for back pain relief. They confiscated it, even though the man had a medicinal permit for use in the US. Then the guy had to convince them he wouldn't try to buy/use while in their country. The agent told him he was lucky this wasn't Thailand as the penalties there are very severe

Different circumstances than us but I'm enjoying the strictness of who gets in and who doesn't...along with what is allowed and what isn't.

They also air episodes on our southern border with mostly drug related smuggling.

Then I see news reports of what's happening on our border......sheesh......the amount of stuff getting smuggled in....... :oops:

ICE confirms Jordanians who attempted to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico were both in US illegally

US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement confirmed that two Jordanian nationals who were apprehended after attempting to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico, are in country illegally.

One of two Jordanian nationals who attempted to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia earlier this month crossed into the U.S. illegally in April before being released, while the other was a foreign student whose status was terminated in January, according to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Both individuals were apprehended on May 3, 2024, after they attempted to breach the Marine Corp base.
 
Facing mounting political pressure over the migrant influx at the U.S. southern border, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that will temporarily shut down asylum requests once the average number of daily encounters tops 2,500 between official ports of entry, according to a senior administration official.

The shutdown would go into effect immediately since that threshold has already been met, a senior administration official said.

Data confirm that the system has been badly strained for many years and is not functioning to provide timely relief for those who warrant it or timely consequences for those without viable protection claims. Due to an outdated and inefficient system and insufficient resources that do not allow for prompt adjudication of claims, too many people have had to be processed by the Border Patrol and released with a notice to appear in removal proceedings before an immigration judge since May 2023. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service affirmative asylum backlog is now over 1 million cases and growing, with over 300,000 applications filed prior to 2021 still pending. At the end of Fiscal Year 2023, there were over 2.4 million cases pending in the immigration courts. Pending cases more than doubled from the end of Fiscal Year 2016 to the end of Fiscal Year 2020 and doubled again between that time and the end of Fiscal Year 2023. Between Fiscal Year 2006 and the end of Fiscal Year 2023, in tandem with historic increases in filings to initiate immigration court proceedings, the immigration courts’ pending caseload increased from approximately 170,000 to approximately 2.46 million. During Fiscal Year 2023, immigration judges completed more cases than they ever had before in a single year, but more than twice as many cases were received by the immigration courts than were completed.

Cristóbal Ascencio García, the bishop of Apatzingán in the Mexican state of Michoacán, said that with the victory of presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum and her left-wing party MORENA in the June 2 elections, the arrival of communism to Mexico is “imminent.”

In a Mass celebrated on June 30, a month after the elections, the prelate thanked those who remain in prayer for Mexico and pray “in face of the imminent arrival of communism.”

The prelate said “it’s becoming increasingly clear” that the electoral process that led to Sheinbaum’s victory “was an election [orchestrated by] the state, with as many irregularities as had ever been seen.”

I wonder if this sort of thing could cause yet another run on the border. I know I sure wouldn't want to be around if this bishop is correct.

I don’t know a ton about Mexican politics. The language barrier being one of them main reasons. It’s easier for me to get stuff from Canada and listen to what Canadian politicians are saying, but if he’s right then that’s a bad deal. It may not be full blown communism but a Venezuela style situation. How do we deal with that considering NAFTA?

That's a hell of a good question. This would be a good question to ask during the debates to see what either candidate wants to do about it.
