Re: Alonzo Lawrence

From what I have herd he was very raw and had a tough time with his technique and understanding the system. He will be interesting to watch in the spring.

I have no information on him, but I too am really looking forward to see how he progresses this spring. As the other responder posted, from what I have read of the experts on these boards, it seems his technique and understanding of position is what is keeping him from playing right now. It was said that he really didn't get any coaching in highschool concerning technique, but got by on raw skills alone. Robbie Green, another true freshman CB out of LA, seems to be the opposite; good technique and understanding of the cb position, but less athleticism. RG played this year (sparingly) but AL did not. Hopefully they both benefitted from a year of learning and working out. I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Most practice questions are absolutely futile. There continue to be questions, but not many answers. The problem is that CNS has absolutely closed practices. That doesn't mean that practice info doesn't leak out to some (and some of us), but it's impossible to let it out, except in the most elliptical way. Anything definitive kills the information, either because the source never talks to us again, or because he has us killed. So, again, questions about practice progress are basically useless. (Some sites just lie.)

So you are saying it depends what the definition of "is" is?

I watched Alonzo for four years in high school and he's a special talent.

His technique didn't seem to hurt him when he completely shut down Julio one on one in the Ala-Miss. All Star Classic.

From what I've heard he has more difficulty with the "reads" than on actual technique, especially in switch coverages, which Bama does a lot of.

Now THAT can be a serious problem because it leaves a receiver wide open with no one covering them at all.

He'll develop into a great DB I predict, but I still think he's a better receiver than anyone we had last year other than Julio. He was unstoppable in high school. He could've helped us a lot on offense this year IMO.

Because of that I was somewhat surprised that he redshirted.

On a related note, it is amazing to think that MJ, our 3rd cb, who played a big part in our defense this year could possibly be 5th or 6th on the depth chart by our opening game. Behind this years starters and maybe RG, AL and Dre if/when he signs with us. The future of our defensive backfield and our entire team does seem bright indeed!

I guess the answer is not to put too much into an all-star performance, pro or con...

Ahh it is such an art trying to decipher the scraps of information that those in the "know" feel they can release.

Now don't get all defensive on me Earle, I know yall can't tell us even half of what you know and I don't mind (that much anyway:)). But if you get to tease us with tidbits, we should be able to tease yall with your elusiveness.

True, but I also watched Alonzo shut down Deandre Brown as well, then turn around and catch 10-12 passes on offense, three for touchdowns.

He also almost beat South Panola by himself in the State Title Game, as a receiver.

But he wanted to play defense. He signed with Bama because of Coach Sabans reputation for coaching DB's.

I agree though on all-star performances. They don't mean very much.

The College Game is a totally different animal as well when it comes to having to use your noggin as much as your body..and right now that's where ZO's hurting.

Ever notice that most great freshmen are running backs or receivers?

They just don't have to think as much, I guess.

I know the question was about football, but I want to mention that Alonzo had an excellent first semester in the classroom. He and his mom seem to be as happy about that as they are about the season.

FWIW, he was recognized by the coaching staff several times this season as the outstanding scout team defender.

I would not be surprised at all to see him claim a starting spot this coming season, as I think MJ and KJ are both vulnerable...

One of the most frustrating things about Saban is how protective he is of his players and how little information he allows to go out. Frustrating for me the fan, but I must agree with him doing it because in the end whats best for the player and the program is whats best for the fans as well. So we just have to deal with it and wait until spring. That's why I always go to A day. It's the only chance you get to get a look at the young guys.

I think most irritating to me is the way he doesn't let any assistants talk to the press until season's end, if then. I miss Joe Kines' bon mots fiercely... :D

I would have loved to have him available in NO.

"Here Alonzo. You cover this guy. Don't let him catch it."

Schemes where you drop off a man have to be learned. If its man coverage I bet AL would have been on the field this year. Like was said earlier...if you drop off at the wrong time in zone coverage...some receiver is debating how he should waltz or dive into the end zone and wondering if its worth the 15 yd. penalty.

I agree. He's still may have some technique issues in his man coverage, but he's athletically gifted enough to play good man coverage. But we do so many combo coverages its tough for even the most talented youngster to come in and be ready for it. Though I think it can be done.

Does not anyone think that he was as good as some who played in the backfield that is older but with time he could be much better than? Would not a year of coaching and developing help a kid who is younger than an older player when at the moment both players are about equal?

I think he could have probably played this year bit would it have benefited Bama or him either one? He still has 4 years of eligibility to go but has more knowledge than he did in August.
