Coaching carousel 2023-24

Yeah, I know, I'm a state worker as well. I just struggle to believe there is not a mechanism in place where "workers " like coaches have to wait that long to get their hire approved yet can still go out and recruit, represent the school and not be under contract that protects the program. Just sounds like a big loophole in the process that can leave the program holding the bag.
Didn't there used to be a state law that no state employee could make more than the governor? UA got around it by paying Saban a significant "talent fee" to make up the difference in his first contract, I believe, but over the last few years, I know his total salary was paid by UA.

I’m sorry to see Grubb and Huff leave but I think you’ll see a great deal more of this (waiting out the 30 day window) to keep down mass transfers. Division 1 football as its currently structured heavily favors the players and hopefully some of this will be reigned in.

NFL light? Nowhere in professional sports can players leave whenever they want to and negotiate with other teams while still being a member of one. Hopefully, the SEC and Big 10 can usher in some sort of organization to this current state of chaos.

Is it confirmed that Huff is leaving also?

I don't think so, as only one source has reported it. As of now, unless I missed something this morning, nothing is official with Huff. I did read on another board they are doing everything they can to keep Huff at Bama. Would be great if he'd stay. I'm more concerned about him leaving than Grubb, even though it stinks he is leaving so soon.

I never understood why he has never gotten another shot as a head coach at a smaller program. While he wasn't up to our standards, he did okay, considering everything. We were on probation with heavy, heavy sanctions for a few years, and scholarship limitations, yet he still managed at 10 win season. It was also his first time ever being a head coach. Given the circumstances, he could have done much, much worse. If Manny Diaz deserves another shot, then why not Mike Shula?
Mike Shula was born into a coaching family. NFL is what he likes and knows.

I haven’t heard anything one way or another. I guess depends on does he want to stay in college or try his luck in the NFL I have heard huff really connects with his players and kids he is recruiting. All former players have had high praise for him. I would like to see him stay and let’s get our line back to being one of our biggest strengths once again.

"Yeah, wish someone had explained that to me a little better."

Yeah, don't think this is correct. .... From the 8/23/2022 extension announcement from UA:

The new agreement will extend his current contract by one season to eight years and keep him in charge of the Crimson Tide football program through at least Feb. 28, 2030. The base salary and talent fee of $9.9 million for the current contract year will increase annually throughout the length of the contract. There will also be a contract completion benefit of $800,000 payable at the end of the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 contract years.

UCLA names DeShaun Foster as new Head coach
Foster, who had taken a job as the Las Vegas Raiders' running backs coach earlier this month, is in the UCLA Hall of Fame as a player, served 10 years in various roles at the school and played seven seasons in the NFL. He emerged among a pool of 11 candidates interviewed by UCLA, many of whom were sitting head coaches.

Foster impressed the UCLA brass with his ability to lead and command a room. Per sources, school officials believe Foster can resonate in the Los Angeles market and emphasize recruiting and fundraising, part of the paradigm shift college football is undergoing in the era of name, image and likeness deals.

Interesting. I just know you can see his full monthly salary on open.ua, and didn't think you could do that when he first got here. Maybe just a reporting thing. My bad.

And if you remember, his brother David Shula followed a similar path to the Head Coach position with the Cincinnati Bengals. And he was a disaster there. He then stepped away from football altogether to manage the Shula’s Steakhouse franchises. He only recently stepped back into football as wide receivers coach at Dartmouth College.

It seems neither of Shula boys were cut out for a head coaching gig, college or pro.

I used to agree whole-heartedly with this but with the passage of time, *Bengals. No one has done anything there. Not even Belechik. Still could be true but now I think we have insufficient info.
